If you are planning to take an extended adventure or travel full time DON’T RUSH TO BUY A NEW RIG.
There is no “best rig”. Only the best one for you. Until you take an extended trip you won’t really know what your best is.
How you like to live and camp is how you will figure it out.
*Will you travel into town or do you stay in camp?
*Will you use horse campgrounds ($$$$) or boondock (free)?
*Do you like privacy while camping or do you want other people around?
*are you frugal or do you like to buy things?
*do you make your meals in camp or do you like to eat out?
*do you need pens for your horses or can you set up an electric fence or string up a highline.
*how much time do you spend inside your camper? Are you a remote worker?
Head out with the rig you already have for a minimum 4-6 weeks and explore these questions. Then you will know exactly what is best for you. A living quarters trailer, truck camper and bumper pull or RV and bumper pull.
We have used a Ford F-550 diesel 4x4 flatbed, a truck camper and bumper pull trailer for 7 years. We took a 6 week practice trip the year before we went full time with the truck, camper and trailer we had. We learned we loved that system but needed it bigger. The length is 52’ and is pinned in the middle so we have more access to tight spaces than a LQ. If we stayed somewhere for longer than 2 weeks we would put the camper on the ground and trailer around to ride or explore without horses. We typically get all supplies before arriving at camp and stay. We are self contained with solar, inverter, composting toilet, Berkey water filter and Starlink.
