Since January.

That's how long Spike has been waiting for someone to see past his challenges and recognize the incredible dog underneath. ❤️

If you've spent any time on the internet lately, you've probably seen the videos of Mr. Darcy from *Pride and Prejudice* dramatically striding across a field. Well, Spike may not be Mr. Darcy running toward you through the mist, but we think he's even better than that. Because while fictional gentlemen are charming, Spike is the real thing.

At 4 years old and 37 pounds, this handsome Australian Cattle Dog mix has watched other dogs find loving homes while he continues to wait. Not because he isn't deserving, but because sometimes the dogs who need a little extra understanding are the easiest to overlook.

Spike is a gentle, affectionate boy who loves being close to his people. His favorite things are simple: soft toys, belly rubs, cuddling with his humans, and leisurely walks. He's the kind of dog who forms deep bonds and just wants someone to share life's quiet moments with.

Spike does have a neurological condition that causes him to become shaky when he's excited. While it can look concerning at first, it's simply part of who he is. He doesn't let it stop him from enjoying life, and we hope it won't stop someone from giving him a chance.

He's also currently undergoing treatment for heartworms and is doing well. He may need continued care after adoption, and our team will be here to support his future family every step of the way. Spike is also working on a training plan, and we'd be happy to discuss his progress and help set him up for success in his new home.

Because busy environments can sometimes feel overwhelming for him, Spike would do best in a home with adults or older teens where he can feel safe, understood, and loved.

What breaks our hearts most is knowing that Spike has so much love to give, yet he continues to be passed by. He doesn't need a perfect family. He just needs someone willing to see his potential, embrace his uniqueness, and give him the chance he's been waiting for since January.

Saturday night, we welcomed 31 new dogs to our Peyton, Colorado campus. While some arrived as transfers from our Dogsville campus, most had just been rescued and were beginning the next chapter of their lives.

One of our favorite moments after a rescue is watching a dog experience a soft blanket for the very first time. It may seem like a small thing, but for dogs who have spent their lives in wire cages, on concrete floors, or outside in harsh conditions, the feeling of something warm and soft beneath their feet is completely new.

You'll often see them pause, unsure at first, before settling in. Some gently knead the blanket with their paws. Others curl up immediately, finally able to relax. In those quiet moments, you can almost see the realization that they are safe.

A blanket is more than just a blanket. It represents comfort, security, and a promise that life is about to get much softer. It symbolizes the love, care, and kindness these dogs deserve and the brighter future that lies ahead.

As they settle in, receive medical care, and begin their journey toward healing, we'll be getting to know each of their unique personalities. While these dogs won't be available for adoption just yet, we can't wait to share their stories with you.

Meet Ice. ❄️

This stunning 7-year-old Husky girl is 47 pounds of calm, cool, and completely unbothered — and honestly, we could all take notes.

Ice is the kind of dog who doesn't need to be the center of attention. She's got her own agenda, thank you very much — and it involves leisurely leash walks, a good toy, and taking in the world at whatever pace she decides is appropriate. She's food motivated, walks beautifully on leash, and will absolutely accept your affection when she decides the moment is right. She's not cold — she's just… selective. Ice has standards. We respect that.

Don't let the independent streak fool you, though. When the moment is calm and the energy is right, this girl has a genuinely soft and sweet side that will absolutely melt you. She just needs a little time to show it on her own terms.

Now for the important stuff. 🩺 Ice is currently undergoing heartworm treatment and will need to return to NMDR for continued care as part of that process. Her adopter must be fully committed to following the treatment plan as outlined by our veterinary team — no exceptions. She is fighting hard and she deserves a family who will fight right alongside her.

Ice does best in a home with no small animals, no cats, and no young children. She can coexist with similarly-sized dogs, though she's generally more "parallel play" than "best friends forever." New introductions to dogs and people should always be done with patience and appropriate supervision.

What Ice needs most is simple: a calm, patient home where the pressure is low and the love is steady. A place where she can just… be. No expectations. No rush. Just a cozy spot and someone who gets that some souls move a little more quietly through the world — and that's not a flaw. That's just Ice being Ice. ❄️🐺

Thirty dogs are heading west!

Today, 30 dogs who have been residing at our Dogsville campus in Humansville, Missouri are making the journey to our Peyton, Colorado campus, where they’ll continue their path toward loving homes.

These transfers are an important part of how we maximize our impact. By moving dogs between campuses, we’re able to create much-needed space at Dogsville as we prepare to welcome approximately 100 additional dogs over the next couple of weeks.

Help us give these travelers a warm Colorado welcome! ❤️

While these dogs are settling into their new surroundings, please note that most are not yet available for adoption. Many still need to be spayed or neutered and medically cleared before they can begin meeting potential adopters.

We also want to remind everyone that NMDR does not move specific dogs between campuses for adoption requests. Dogs are transferred internally only for operational reasons, such as creating space for incoming rescues, balancing population between campuses, or providing specialized medical care.

If one of these faces catches your eye, now is the perfect time to get your application submitted. Being preapproved means you’ll be ready when these dogs officially become available.

If you watched this video without knowing Sutton’s story, you’d probably think she was just a happy, playful puppy doing what puppies do best.

And that’s exactly what makes it so special.

At just 2.5 months old, Sutton was relinquished due to concerns about possible spinal abnormalities. Yet here she is—running, playing, exploring, and embracing life with all the enthusiasm of a puppy who refuses to let anything slow her down.

While Sutton’s journey is still unfolding, and she will soon head to our Colorado campus for specialized diagnostics and medical care, today we wanted to celebrate her fighting spirit. Her future may hold appointments, tests, and important medical decisions, but it also holds joy. Lots of joy.

Sutton is not currently available for adoption as we focus on getting her the care she needs, but we couldn’t resist sharing this glimpse of the bright, determined little girl who has already stolen so many hearts.

If you’re in Colorado right now, you know just how intense this heat wave has been—and Havoc, our two-year-old Staffordshire Bull Terrier, has been feeling it too!

That’s why he got to enjoy a day in the pool. During his pool time, Havoc discovered something he loves just as much as the water: the hose! Equal parts curious and playful, he was completely fascinated by it. Instead of splashing around in the pool, he spent most of his time chasing, investigating, and playing with the hose—and it was absolutely adorable to watch.

Havoc is an incredibly sweet boy with a fun-loving personality that will keep you smiling every day. He’s available for adoption at our Peyton, Colorado campus and is ready to bring plenty of love, laughter, and companionship to a loving home.

Pupdate on Hospice Adoption, NMDR Jazzy

“I am the extremely lucky one who got to bring Jazzy home for however many days she has.

The first night she explored the backyard, curled up in the dirt and fell asleep. It was both precious and heartbreaking.

She’s learning how to eat with her wonky jaw and Schultzie has taught her the fine art of begging.

The bay window is where she likes to snooze. Scared the holy moly outta me when I couldn’t find her! She was sound asleep. And I mean sound!!!

She has 3 beds to choose from in the upstairs bedroom but I’ll usually find her snuggling with Cinder or Schultzie in the morning.

She can go down the stairs, but not up the stairs. 🙃
I’ve got some little adventures planned for her and she gets dessert every night. All of them have to check each others bowls out to make sure all the whipped cream is gone.
