Luna update. 💜

If you have been following Luna, our 2.5 year old deaf Dalmatian with Save the Dalmatians and Others Canine Rescue, swipe through this slowly, because this progress took weeks. 🐶

For her first couple of weeks here, Luna would not even let me touch her. More than anything, it was decompression, on her terms, space, quiet, and time to decide she was safe.

And I want to be honest about this part. If Luna had come in straight for training, it would have been a disaster.

She had no regulation at all. She would not have settled, not even a little. Training on top of that would have just put a band-aid over her issues, without ever giving her the time to actually work through them underneath.

It took weeks for her to show any type of tension release at all, like stretching. After that came a play bow meaning she was comfortable enough to play. And now is she allowing some nervous system regulation and bodywork, because she is finally choosing it. 🤍

That is the order that matters for a dog like Luna. Settle first, then learn.

Luna is available for adoption now, to a unicorn adopter. 🏡 This will not be typical dog ownership, not only because she is deaf, but because of the trauma and fear she carries too. She is not going to be a cuddly dog, she is not going to sleep with you at night, and especially in the beginning, there will be times when she wants nothing to do with you, and her person has to be okay with that. She may do well with another dog, but it will really depend on that specific dog.

Meet Spot! 💜

Our 6 year old Dalmatian boy with Save the Dalmatians and Others Canine Rescue, and fetch is his love language. 🎾

Spot is deaf, and he clearly had training in the past. Our work together is communication, so he knows what we are asking even without sound, and fetch is where that communication shines.

Lexi update! 💜

For those of you who have been following Lexi, our Dalmatian rescue here for reactivity to dogs and people, here is a look back at week one last week.

Week one was not about manners at all. It was about nervous system regulation first, and bodywork, because Lexi holds a lot of emotion in her hips, and in the leg with a scar from a previous dog fight. This video is from that first week: settling and regulation, red light therapy on her leg, frequency healing with tuning forks, and then Lexi settled and loving at the end.

Now in week two, we are building on that foundation. This is the work I love most, the dogs nobody can quite figure out.

Time for a long overdue update on our current crew. 🐾 We've got four Dalmatians here, and all of them are making real progress.

Lexi, with Paradise Valley Rescue, is our formal training dog. She came to us with reactivity to dogs and people, and this first week has been all about nervous system regulation, plus some bodywork. She holds a lot in her hips and in the leg with the scar from a previous dog fight, and that stuff matters before manners can really stick.

Then we've got our three deaf Dalmatians with Save the Dalmatians and Others Canine Rescue, learning communication through e-collar work. Spot is having an absolute blast playing fetch 🎾, and he clearly had training in a past life. Luna has come such a long way. 💜 She's a very reactive girl, and we've worked on her regulation until she's genuinely comfortable with us, so e-collar communication is next for her. And little Iris is learning her puppy manners right alongside her communication work 🐶.

And the best part is, these four are all rescue dogs looking for their people. 🤍🏠 Lexi, Spot, and Luna are available for adoption now, and little Iris already has an adoption pending. The Dalmatian crew here just got bigger, and Lexi is the newest member! 🐾

She is here for her 3 week board and train program, which I think officially qualifies me as a Dalmatian whisperer now. 😆

Lexi is working on two big things while she is with me: nervous system regulation and her obedience. The goal is a Lexi who feels calmer and more comfortable around people and other dogs, with a lot less reactivity. 🐕💜

Regulation comes first because a dog whose body feels safe can actually learn. From there, solid manners give her clear direction, so she always knows what is being asked of her instead of having to figure out the world on her own. ✨

An accident in the house at week two, in a dog who was previously housetrained.

Your first thought: we're going backward.

Meet Iris, Luna, and Spot, the three Dalmatians who joined us this weekend! 🐾🪻🌜🐶

Iris is 14 weeks old, Luna is 2.5 years old, and Spot is 5 years old, and all three have one big thing in common: they are deaf. Each of them has their own goals, and I am excited to get started. 🐕

For Iris and Spot, the first thing we are teaching is the e-collar as a communication tool. The tap works like calling their name or tapping them on the shoulder, and the goal is for them to look for me whenever they feel it. That is the foundation, and commands build from there. 💜

Luna has been through a lot in her short life and is still learning to trust people, so her journey starts with nervous system regulation. Once she feels safe, we will introduce the e-collar. Iris is a puppy, so her training also centers on socialization and exposure, and Spot's confidence will grow as he learns to communicate with humans. 🌟🐾
