We had the most wonderful dinner this evening. We invited the dude’s dad and his lovely wife, Sue Wheeler ❤️, for dinner. We prepared smoked spatchcock chicken, lemon pasta, and sautéed asparagus. What a lovely, bright, summer dinner!! I’m super sorry I didn’t take a pic of this masterpiece we devoured!! Thank you Jen for coming by for cocktail hour! After days and days of work, an evening spent with some of your favorite people sets your soul right! ❤️❤️

But… I did get a pic of one of our last sunflowers 🌻 💛

Happy Sunday, folks.

Our wacky pupper, Edna, had her DNA analyzed recently… We know the folks we got her from and certainly didn’t doubt them when they told us her genetics, buuuut we just wanted to see for ourselves!

So, Edna is indeed part Gray Wolf! Her hunt drive and her size definitely confirm as such!

I’m sure many of you have seen her sneak out the front gate or leer at you through the house windows.. she’s sweet as pie!

Here’s her results:

We’ve been stewing on a new logo for a while since we decided to step away from pork production earlier this year. The dude has the greenest of thumbs so we’ve throttled hard on flowers and produce this season and it turned out great for us!

Since Madelyn passed away a couple weeks ago, there’s no more “old dogs” on the farm, (in case you’re new to following our page, we started the farm when we had FIVE senior dogs). Since we produce dehydrated chicken parts as dog chews, we feel we needed to include our remaining doggos, Bob and Edna in our logo (the image).

This year we’re diving head first into Indigo production, so we’ve switched our color to…indigo. 💙

Indigo was a major 18th-century cash crop in South Carolina. Valued as "blue gold," it became the colony’s second-largest export after rice. In present day, indigo is grown primarily in the low country…. Leave it to Old Dog Farm SC to bring it upstate! ….stay tuned! 👀

And finally, our logo includes these words:

Flora: all the plant life found in a specific region or time period;

Fauna: all the animal life present in a specific region, habitat, or geological time period;

Floof: quite simply, an endearing slang term used to describe a fluffy animal—such as a cat or dog—or a mass of soft, puffy fur… our beloved doggos, Bob and Edna.

Celebrate new laying hens with us!!

This week…. We have young laying hens who have begun laying eggs!! Yay!! 👏👏

To celebrate, we’ve included one of these young eggs in one of our cartons that we deliver to PF Meat Co. Butchery & Market in Pendleton. And, just to be fun, we’ve also included one of our older lady’s gigantic eggs in a separate carton. Purchase a carton of our eggs from PF Meat this week and if your carton contains either of these special eggs… there’s only two - the new, small egg and the GIANT egg, you will WIN your choice of:
Bob’s Body Bag (a variety of dehydrated chicken parts for your dog to enjoy),
OR a package of our pastured raised chicken (your choice of one package of boneless skinless breasts, boneless skinless thighs, or leg quarters - you pick which you’d like).

If your carton contains one of the winning eggs, text a pic of the egg to Lianne at 864-318-0340.

This giveaway is this week only!

Thank you for supporting our farm!! ❤️👩‍🌾🧑‍🌾🐓🥚

I feel compelled to say a word or two regarding the Netflix documentary, “Big Chicken”… The gist is, a British man, who happens to be a comedian, loves fried chicken, and he chooses to eat fried chicken for every meal for 30 days….in America. It’s interesting and I recommend it.

Ok, so maybe you’ve seen the documentary about McDonalds called “Super Size Me” from 2004 and we know this all doesn’t end well… This one is somewhat similar, but delves specifically into the chicken industry.

One thing that made me pause the show is… the “chicken catchers”… these are migrant workers (in this particular case) who simply pick up meat birds and put them into transport cages… you’ve seen them on highways from time to time, the white chickens packed into crates loaded on tractor trailers. And this lady is saying how chickens are “vicious,” and how hard of a job it is… ‼️‼️I’m about to have a coronary! The meat birds in question are Cornish Cross - created to grow fast and be meaty. I’ve raised many, many Cornish Cross, as well as three other breeds of dual purpose chickens. Let me tell you right now, Cornish Cross are the most docile of all chickens I’ve raised, meat and layer. They’re the easiest to process and I will never again process any other type of chicken but Cornish Cross, ever. If you didn’t know otherwise, you’d think… “oh! These poor workers!” No, not true.

And they show chickens who “can’t stand” because of their weight and it’s a bird that weighs maybe two pounds! Granted it’s been raised in a CAFA house and unaccustomed to moving at all but to eat and drink. In our world, a BIG bird is 6lbs! Ours are pasture raised so they’re used to moving around like normal chickens do, so they can get large without the dire consequences of their own weight!

Anyhoo… I gotta defend my birds. They’re great! Ya, they stink a bit and p**p A LOT, but they’re extra cared for and I’ll never, ever purchase chicken from a grocery store again when I can raise the real deal right here on our property.

But, I digress… Key point here… stay far away from fast food, over processed chicken!!! I certainly don’t want to create more work for myself, as being licensed for poultry slaughter, but farm raised, fresh chicken is among the best tasting foods you’ll ever eat.

Bradford pear trees are highly invasive in North America, spreading aggressively via bird-dispersed seeds and root suckers. Native to Asia, it's adaptable to many conditions but forms dense thickets that crowd out native plants, and its weak branches often break, causing damage. Many states have banned its sale due to its invasive nature.

This one is a goner.
