Unleash the Bird Dog! Ronnie and Susanna Smith offer SEMINARS for PEOPLE and TRAINING for BIRD DOGS.

10/29/2026

Professional trainers, upland guides, and hunters of all experience levels gathered with us last weekend for our Advanced Seminar. The shared devotion to bird dogs was evident in the distances they traveled, coming from Nevada, Montana, Arizona, Texas, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Pennsylvania, and points in between!

It is always an honor to spend time in the field with people who share our appreciation for bird dogs. Together, we studied dog behavior, refined our techniques, and worked toward better understanding and responses from our dogs. It was a weekend of good dogs, good people, and plenty to learn.

As we wrap up another year of seminars, we are grateful to everyone who invited us to be part of their bird dog training journey. It has been another year for the record books, and we couldn't ask for a better group of people to share the fields with.

Here's to the dogs, the people behind them, and many more good days walking the fields together!

We had some great training sessions at our Intermediate Seminar last weekend! Each dog brought something for our group to learn from and we got to see the dividends of the training their handlers had already put in with their dogs.

The dedication of these bird dog owners is impressive. They want what is best for their dogs and are putting in the work to make that happen!

Dr. Joe Wurster DVM joined us again for a discussion on bird dog health and wellness. Dr. Joe has a wealth of firsthand bird dog knowledge, both in the field and in the clinic. His insight and guidance helps us to have a better understanding of our dogs physical needs and helps us to be better prepared for any health issues that may arise.

Thanks to everyone for coming and spending time with us in the field learning about the bird dogs that we all love so much!

We are looking forward to being out there again this coming weekend for our Advanced Seminar!

Why make the effort to train your bird dog?

•𝐒𝐚𝐟𝐞𝐭𝐲 ~ First and foremost, good training allows you peace of mind that you will be able to handle your dog in any of the unpredictable situations that can occur during a hunt. Having control of your dog minimizes the chances of loosing him, having him get shot, hurt in a wildlife encounter, etc…

•𝐒𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐎𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬 ~ Simply put, the more mannerly and experienced your dog is, the more bird shooting opportunities you will have.

•𝐄𝐧𝐣𝐨𝐲𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 ~ Everyone enjoys having a well behaved, productive bird dog on a hunt. And that includes hosts, guides, and friends that invite you to hunt with them.

Our Fall Tune Up Class was full of early morning workouts, lots of miles walked, and plenty of pretty bird work. We are proud of the progress these dogs made this month. They are focused on finding game, responsive to cues, and consistent in their handling and steadiness. We worked to get them in a mindset that will allow them to be the best hunters they can be this season and we feel they all accomplished that.

As always, we are very thankful for the owners that travel across the country in order for us get their dogs tuned up for hunting season. We had dogs here from Florida to Arizona to Montana and all points between. It is the dedication that these owners have that makes such a difference for their dogs!

Good luck this season to all of our owners! We enjoy hearing the stories of your hunts!

He was a legend in many respects. He was inducted in to both the Pointer/Setter Bird Dog Hall of Fame and the Brittany Hall of Fame. He was a recipient of the T. Boone Pickens Lifetime Sportsman’s Award. He was dubbed “King of the Chutes” at the Lazy E Arena. He is known to have spent time with the Queen of England. He was dubbed the “World’s Coolest Man” by Field and Stream. His accolades, recognition, and achievements go on.

To us, he was simply Uncle Delmar. A man of strong character and convictions. The man that insisted on buying our kids battery powered vehicles to roam around the kennel on. He made a point to create a connection with our kids, hugging them every chance he got. He was the man that bought a dear friend a horse to ride and when she and the horse retired from field trials, he asked us if the horse could spend his golden years in our pastures, ensuring old Frosty retired to the same land Delmar grew up roaming. He was a man that would sit with us in the field or at the kennel for hours talking about bird dogs and horses and how they think. He was also the man that slept in a chair in our living room with the TV blaring all night, causing some extra coffee to be required the following morning. These are just some of the memories that will continue to bring Delmar to life in our minds.

“Well, how about that, sports fans” will echo through our minds for years to come. It was one of Delmar’s standby one liners. And he had a bag that was stuffed brim full of them.

When it rains, we will look across the pasture and hear the cadence of his voice exclaiming “That bluestem is about to jump clean through itself.”

And as we run dogs across the field, we will keep in mind “Always give the dog the benefit of doubt.”

Another was “Charge it to the dust and let the rain settle it” when someone wanted to pay him back for some generous deed of his.

The driving forces in Delmar’s life were dogs, horses, and people. Oh how he loved people. He would always say “The best gift you can give a person is your time.” Well, Delmar, thank you for the 100 years worth of time you gave us on this earth. You made the most out of every day and it was a great gift.

We will continue to celebrate your life and try to hang on to the nuggets of wisdom that you left behind.

Training dogs is more than just teaching commands. It’s about communication and the relationships that shape how a dog experiences training and interprets what we’re asking.

Our training goal every day is to build willing partners.

We added a Big A Evaporative Cooler to the mix at the kennel this summer. It, and the 24 ft Big A ceiling fan, have done a great job keeping temps pleasant. What a great addition!

Personal space?

Not happening with a Brittany around!!!

We do get some great iPhone screenshots though…

How do you know if your dog understands a leash cue?

Try putting slight tension on the lead when your dog is standing looking away from you. If your dog yields and turns toward you, he understands and is complying with the cue. If he leans in to it and stays where he is, he doesn’t know to move in response to the cue.

Real communication and training can take place once your dog understands how to respond to cues.

The goal is to have a dog that consistently heels on a loose lead, willingly yielding to subtle leash cues, fully understanding the concept and happily complying.
