It’s Not Just Training. It’s a Relationship.

Training isn’t just about commands — it’s about communication. When you study your animal and learn how your dog thinks and reacts, everything comes together smoother. Handling a dog isn’t like using a programmed computer. It is a nuanced, give and take partnership.

Which is also what keeps it so fun! Every day is unique and dogs keep teaching us more!

Ready to take your bird dog beyond the basics?

Our Intermediate Seminar will be here soon! It is designed for dogs that have completed Foundation Training and are ready to begin e-collar cues, steadiness, and off-lead control.

Over the weekend, we’ll work on:
⭐️ Off-lead heeling
⭐️ Honoring another dog’s point
⭐️ Steadiness on game
⭐️ Field handling and teamwork
⭐️ And more!

If your dog is ready for that next challenge, join us for this stage of training that transforms potential into performance in the field.

📅 Intermediate Seminar – October 25–26

Working spots are limited to ensure personalized attention. Visit our website to reserve your spot!

Focus.

It’s what carries a dog through the tough hunts—the long days, heavy cover, hot temperatures, and when birds are scarce. Focus keeps them hunting with purpose even when conditions test their drive.

As trainers and handlers, we’re always walking that fine line between keeping manners in mind and building that unwavering focus on finding birds. It’s a balance that, when done right, brings out the very best in a dog.

Farewell, dear Tall Chief of the Osage.
You were a blessing in our lives for nearly 14 years.

Chief was one of the finest, best-minded Brittanys we’ve ever known—poised, classy, and all heart. He gave his all on every hunt and left behind nothing but cherished memories and a legacy that lives on through his pups.

Run free, Chief. You’ll always be part of our family. 💕

Tired girl headed home after her September Tune-Up Class with us. She - and the rest of the crew - worked hard this past month, and it shows. Proud of how each dog progressed and excited to see them all hitting the fields for some great hunts this season!

We are still accepting reservations for our Spring Basic Training Class. Now is a good time to sign up and your dog would then be eligible to participate in any future Tune Up Classes!

“Our Georgia Boys”

We had a blast working 3 of the 4 of these littermates by Hackberry’s Elhew Chief and our Georgia Mae yesterday. They’re all personable, level-headed, easy to train, very steady, and stylish. The 6th generation of this line of ours will be starting their training this fall and we can’t wait to see how they develop!

Check out the comments below to see a progression of these boys growing up!

Managing land is always a moving target. Each year brings new challenges—drought can thin the grass, while heavy rains make it tower above our heads. We rely on every tool we have—including burning, grazing, and mowing—to keep habitat healthy and our training grounds productive.

This season’s rains have been both a blessing and a challenge, leaving us with overflowing ponds, washed-out roads, and bluestem growing tall and strong. We’ve been busy grooming training fields with the tractor, making sure they are in shape to facilitate the upcoming classes.

We’re looking forward to our training dogs arrival and many great days in the field this fall!

“Loyal to the end, and part of us forever.” Truer words have never been spoken. We have 8 of his progeny in our kennel tonight and more to come in for training this fall. Our family is looking forward to the lasting impact Roman will have on future generations. His legacy lives on and they are fed with Pro Plan!

Loyal to the end, and part of us forever.

We were honored to have Scott Linden invite us to be back on Upland Nation during this past Pheasant Fest. Scott has been kind enough to have us as guests a few times and he asks great questions that lead us to discuss things with a bit of a different perspective. Our friend, Tom Dokken, covers the second half of this episode. Anytime we are around Tom we are soaking up what he has to say. He is a great dog trainer and an all around top-notch guy!

Hope y’all enjoy this episode!

First, Ronnie and Susanna Smith on puppy development, behavioral tips and tricks to maximize performance for your bird dog. Big skies, green grass, and the promise of good training days ahead…

We’ve been blessed with some great rains this summer and the training fields are looking better than ever—covered with a healthy stand of waving bluestem and variety of native plants. Between the storms, we’ve been at work on the property and getting ready for our next training class.

We’re excited to share that we’ve been guests on a couple of fun podcasts lately. We’ll be posting links in the next couple of days, so stay tuned!

We tend to write notes to ourselves on a dry erase board at the kennel as food for thought on training concepts or inspirations. I’ll share with you one that has spent the last few weeks on our board….

“The best performers naturally tend to be leaders. A dog that doesn’t listen or readily join up with you presents a strength to work with and mold, rather than a “defect” in need of “fixing.”

Our Story

RSK is the lifeblood of a duo of dog trainers (Ronnie Smith & Susanna Love) located in northern Osage County, Oklahoma. Together with our kiddos, Gage & Reagan, we live a life full of purpose…taking care of and training bird dogs.

We would love to share our experiences and dog training stories with you here on FB!

“There is joy in every moment with a bird dog. Seek that joy, cultivate an appreciation of what each individual bird dog is, and enjoy how marvelous a relationship with a bird dog can be. You will be hooked on bird dogs forever. The journey of training never ends.”

So what is the official RSK story?
