Have you heard the saying that light hands make light horses? It's not true. Educated hands make light horses is actually a truer statement. You have to feel if your horse is being responsive to your hands. When you lift do you feel their face? You shouldn't in the best case scenario. They would just follow the feel of the reins and respond accordingly. If they feel like a brick on the end of the reins then they aren't light and that's where the whole light hands light horses theory falls apart. Now is where educated hands have to fix things, the horse has to be taught to be light and stay light. Sometimes that means being harder on them for a couple seconds until they respond, then go right back to asking lightly. Go harder on their sides if they aren't responding to your hands in a turn around for example. Then go right back to asking lightly.
I was thinking about this because we vaccinated some calves the other day and they were being asked really lightly to get moving down the alley to the shoot. They were not responding at all, I mean just standing there facing the people asking them to move. So if the pressure you are asking with isn't getting a response, the only thing you can do is increase the pressure to a level that gets a response. Same with horses as cattle in a way. Pressure is only going to work if it's enough to get a response otherwise you are going to be there all day and the cattle or horses are going to learn they don't have to listen because the little pressure is nothing to them and you are teaching them to ignore you.
Just like if you were speeding and got pulled over by the police. But the police just let you go every time with just a very polite warning. Pretty soon you'd be thinking there are no real consequences so you'd drive as fast as you like. It's the ticket that makes you think twice about the speed limit sign.
Same with them listening to your body in the saddle. You can ask for a stop with your seat but what if they don't respond? Then you have to make them want to respond by making them work harder until they put the effort in to stop. It's always easier on them if they are light so eventually they will be looking for the right answer. In their minds they think oh she sat deep in the saddle and that means if I stop hard I get a break. Horses are lazy by nature so it works great for them. Hope that helps! Feather is feeling better and back to work! She takes a little extra care to get back to work because of her PSSM1 and she's been on stall rest for a couple weeks. I started with slow work in the arena a couple times a day and she had a short ride the past few days. Today she went out and did a job. Still not a super hard day on her and only a couple hours. Lots of walking and a few times she loped. She will gradually get back in the shape she was in before the abscess, it just takes a little longer with her condition. Just trying to be a little extra cautious.

I got to thinking about why the vaquero tradition is about looking nice too, besides having well trained horses. I was getting Ransom ready to go move cows and it took me an extra 5 minutes to get his bosolita tied on. I could have spent some extra time tying a mustache knot in his tail, I spent an hour last night conditioning my chinks, Ransom has a beautiful bit that I take time to make sure shines, Why take the time you might think 🤔
It's about being proud of what your occupation is, it's about being proud of your horse you trained, it's about being proud of the traditions you follow and are trying to keep alive. Not arrogance, just doing a job with class and looking good. I like that part. Someone asked on a previous post, "why are your chinks and hat so clean?" I said because I'm a fair weather cowgirl but it's more about taking care of my things and trying to look good. I'm representing the vaquero traditions, I'm proud of that.
If you look back at old black and white pictures of vaqueros, they took pride the same way. They had shiny silver bits, beautiful outfits, and clean, well cared for tack and horses. If you want to learn more give us a call. We give lessons and clinics.
