May is Lyme Disease Prevention Month

Trivia Time; Which tick is primarily responsible for carrying Lyme Disease?

A. Lone star tick
B. Black-legged tick (Deer tick)
C. Asian longhorned tick

Lyme disease is caused by a spirochete, Borrelia burgdorferi. A spirochete is a type of bacterium. It is transmitted to dogs through the bite of a tick. Ticks transmit B. burgdorferi spirochetes directly through the bite wound, but not at first attachment, because they need roughly 24 to 48 hours of attachment for bacterial transmission through the tickโ€™s salivary glands; however shorter times for transmission have been reported (Zoetis). Once in the blood stream, the Lyme disease organism is carried to many parts of the body. While cats are less susceptible to Lyme disease than humans and dogs, they can still become infected.

Typically, ticks are most abundant in grassy, brushy, or wooded areas. However, their ability to attach themselves to humans and other animals means they can easily find their way indoors.

Therefore, preventing exposure to ticks is important for you and your pets. We highly encourage you to have your dog tested once yearly, keep your pet on year-round flea/tick prevention, and vaccinate your dog against Lyme Disease.
