HAPPY TAILS!!!

I first met Nami when she was still named Lizzie at the Owatonna Downtown Thursday event on June 4th. My fiancée and I were simply going to Downtown Thursdays to check it out at the recommendation of one of her coworkers since we have never been. We were enjoying all of the pop-up stands that were selling diverse food and goodies. When we made it to central park and we got some food from one of the trucks when we saw some puppies playing and then eventually laying exhaustedly in a puppy-pile in the grass.

When we approached, we asked the foster parents if we could pet one of the puppies in which they gladly encouraged, after a while the puppies were comfortable with us and so we asked if we could hold the most relaxed puppy of the group in which they happily obliged. We then quickly fell in love with her and we asked her what her current name was and they responded, “Lizzie”. After growing attached to the puppy and getting to know the foster parents I asked them if they were up for adoption yet or if they were still too young and they said that they were up for adoption and that I could get an application up at the booth they had set up to help answer any questions that anyone may have. When more people came to see the puppies my fiancé and I knew we had to leave so other people could get their turn, although personally I could have hung out with them forever.

Once my fiancée and I got our fill of the rest of what Downtown Thursdays had to offer we left and had a long car ride filled with discussion about the possibility of adding another member to our family as we had already had another dog Beanie who was just over three and half years old and we knew she got along with all cats, dogs and humans big and small.

After taking some time to really think it over and through I applied the very next day hoping that we would have a chance to provide as much love and care that we could possibly give. I knew that I was ready to give “Lizzie” her forever home. I heard back from the Steel County Humane Society just under a week later in which they had the foster parents reach out to us and then they took it from there. The foster parents were absolutely terrific to work with and were willing to work with us on timing due to us recently buying our first home and just beginning to move in. I cannot say enough wonderful things about the foster parents and Steel County Humane Society they have truly given us opportunity of lifetime by allowing us to adopt Nami and add her to our pack.

Miss Lydia decided that for her birthday party instead of gifts for herself she would request that her friends and family give donations for the dogs and cats in need. Her mom reached out to the Steele County Humane Society to present all the donations that were received. We are so appreciative of all the gifts that she was able to gather for all of our fur friends in need. Thank you Lydia for your kind and generous gifts!! We appreciate you!!! 🎉🥰

SENIOR SPOTLIGHT: DAISY

Meet Daisy — a little girl finally getting the second chance she’s always deserved.
At 9 years old, Daisy is discovering what it truly means to be loved. Before entering foster care in January, she spent much of her life living on a farm, often in a garage, without the comfort, stability, and companionship every dog should know. Since then, her foster family has watched her slowly blossom into a devoted and affectionate companion.
Daisy has made incredible progress in foster care. She is now kennel-trained, leash-trained, and learning household routines beautifully. She does well with pottying outside when let out consistently and continues improving with patience and structure each day.
Because of her past, Daisy is looking for a very specific forever home where she can feel safe and secure. After years of relying only on herself, she prefers to be the only pet and would do best in a home without children. Early in foster care, she could be reactive when uncomfortable, but once her pain was identified and properly managed with medication, her true personality began to shine. With trust, consistency, and feeling physically better, she has formed strong bonds with her foster dad and the adults she knows best.
And the real Daisy? She’s a sweetheart. A quiet shadow who simply wants to be near her people, soaking up love and companionship. She would thrive in a calm, lower-activity home with a single person or couple willing to continue giving her the understanding and stability she has worked so hard to trust. Daisy will need ongoing pain management, but in return she’ll offer unwavering loyalty, gentle companionship, and a whole lot of love.
She may not have always had the chance to be this dog — but now she does. Could you be the one to give Daisy the peaceful forever home she deserves?
Daisy is spayed and up to date on all age-appropriate vaccinations.

A Quick Reminder for Our Community

We love how much our community cares about animals, and we want to clear up a misunderstanding we’ve been seeing. SCHS and Owatonna Animal Control (Owatonna Animal Shelter) are not the same organization. We each have our own roles, though we do work together when it helps an animal.

Here’s the easiest way to remember it:
• Animals found inside Owatonna city limits → Owatonna Animal Control (Owatonna Animal Shelter)
• Animals found in the county → SCHS may have them

We’re all working toward the same goal: keeping pets safe and getting them back home. Thank you for helping us share accurate information.

If you want more clarity, you can explore animal control, our lost pet process, or how city vs county intake works.
