Let’s talk seriously about molting season and the real frustrations, what we can do, and how to support our flocks in this transition. I told someone this morning that the chickens may look like they are “doing nothing” (and I do joke about Fancy Freeloader Camp 😆) but the reality is they are actively doing something every day! They are getting ready for winter, shedding their summer “coats”, and are MAKING FEATHERS! 🪶 at a very rapid pace I might add! This process takes a lot of ENERGY, PROTEIN & PATIENCE! What would normally go into producing eggs, has to shift gears, and turn into a feather factory! For several weeks, maybe more! 👀
Things we can do
🐓 clean up those areas that look like there was a pillow fight 😜
🐓 increase the protein with high value treat snacks, black sunflower seeds are a great source of this which is found in Strong Animals Chicken Essentials Happy Tract! Use code APA20 for 20% your entire order on their website! Every time you order!! (Such an awesome deal!)
🐓 carefully handle chickens that have “pin feathers” coming in
🐓 marvel at the amazing creation Yahweh has put in order by giving these birds the ability to adapt to the different seasons!
🐓 understand that laying is highly seasonal for most breeds ESPECIALLY the fancier chickens
🐓wait patiently and make jokes about it along the way - it helps ease the pain of the soaring feed costs and the lack of eggs 🤭
🐓 pray that you don’t end up in the grocery store buying eggs as a Poultry breeder / keeper😂
🐓 know that you’re not alone, if you’ve had chickens for any length of time, you know this is part of the deal
💡Because we believe we are stewarding The King’s Chickens, we don’t add additional lights to any of our flock’s coops. We follow His lead, and trust His perfect plan for them, and for us, even with the decrease in egg production. Others might suggest “supplemental light” but we don’t. We raise strong and hardy chickens Yah’s way, in and out of season, supporting them through their natural order of things.
How are your chickens doing this time of year?Let us know in the comments, and please mention what your weather is like and what area of the country you’re in so we can see how much all that plays into the final analysis!
Happy chicken tending!! Let’s do some chicken math y’all! 🤩🐓🫶
