I wanted to give a huge shoutout to my incredibly talented coach, . She leads by example and constantly challenges me to hold myself to a higher standard. At times training feels like 4D chess, she has me looking at things from so many different angles, many of which come from years of doing the work herself and stepping onto the trial field.

What I admire most is that she never stops learning. Whether it’s months before a trial, days before a trial, or even during a trial weekend 🤣, she’s always looking for ways to improve and bring that knowledge back to the team. I’m sorry we get to learn so much from your mistakes.

People see a handler and a dog on the field, but there is a village behind every team. I am incredibly grateful for everything you’ve invested in Zim and me. We wouldn’t be here without your guidance, support, and friendship.

The first clip is Zim in a heel I only use for dog sport trials. It was taught with tons of reinforcement and a great game of tug. If I needed to manage him by putting him into that heel I could. But he isn’t really making any choices, he’s focused on a mission that he knows leads to a reward.
In the second clip he’s just hanging out not being cued to do anything. In fact if I started to cue him to do things he would be happy to. But I also want him to make choices without being constantly handled and managed.
I hear it all the time, my dog did great in this group class, but once we go home or I’m outside with just a leash everything goes out the window. I find a lot of the dogs with owners saying that are highly motivated and love doing the work. However, they then struggle when they aren’t working for a reward.
With dogs like this if we start telling them TO DO things, sit, come, place etc they will start performing like Zim in the first clip. That is why I believe it is appropriate to make sure we have a way to tell dogs to NOT DO things.

People have been saying Zim is super uncomfortable and even fearful based on a 10 second clip of him walking. I’m not sure what to do 😐🤣.

There’s a difference between being observant and being hyper-interpretive.
Yes, dogs communicate through body language. And yes, stress and pain signals matter. But isolating every lip lick, glance, or moment of alertness and calling it “distress” is missing the bigger picture.
Context matters. Breed matters. Recovery matters.

Baloo was a lap dog from the moment I got him. Last video was taken just a few days before he passed. He truly was the best boy until end ❤️

It’s not a good sign if I say goodbye to you in French 🥹🥹.

Zim is preparing for his first French ring trial next month. (Stating this here so I can’t chicken out) We are still prepping for mondioring level 2 but why not make life more complicated. 😂😂
