Critical thinking moment that made me fully commit to moving away from balanced training was during my continued education seminars a while back. The vet behaviorist was explaining why certain tools or methods were not acceptable to the associations larger than dog trainers. When someone tried to snap back, she didn’t argue, she didn’t even get upset, she, with genuine concern, said “If the tool or method is perfectly fine, then why does science tell us otherwise? If it is not a cause for concern to use these tools or methods, then why are they banned in multiple countries?”. That was it for me. That’s what got me. I was convinced. Beyond the data that I knew was important to follow, she made a wonderful point. That many countries, doing this way longer than the United States, with way more deep diving into animal welfare, behavioral sciences, etc, were outright banning them.

Through the many years of canine adventures, pet care, training, behavior modification, vet work, and so much more, I’ve had so many amazing animals and families brought into my life. I will always be grateful for the first timers, the risky fur kids, the sillies, the zoomies, and all of the smiles I get to be a part of when I’m with them. Animals are a huge part of my entire life, I’m exceptionally fortunate that I found my calling at such a young age. ❤️

You guys remember Peter? Right? The stray I caught about a month ago? His new owner has been working tirelessly to get his hands on a voucher for a neuter with no avail. I’m looking to reach out to the community in hopes for more resources for affordable neuter and or ideas to help raise funds to afford one in general. Currently we’re looking at $1,500-2,000…. Yikes.

Open to ideas and thoughts to help Peter and his new forever family ❤️🐾

Walk away from the ideology that all dogs, especially very different dogs, should have the same expectations.

“Each breed moves according to its structure; to expect identical movement or performance from all dogs is to ignore the very anatomy that defines them.”

“Function follows form; a dog’s structure dictates not only how it moves, but what it can reasonably be expected to do.”

“The diversity of canine structure produces a diversity of movement; no single standard can fairly apply to all breeds.”

“A dog built for speed cannot move like one built for endurance, and neither should be judged by the other’s standard.”

“Structure imposes limits as well as possibilities, and understanding those limits is essential to evaluating performance.”

“To evaluate all dogs by the same criteria is to overlook the purpose for which each breed was designed.”

All of these inserted quotes are taken from a very well science backed book with two incredible authors of our field. They yield very important messages about the diversity of the species and how we adjust expectations for each of them for their safety and well being.

The book Dogs in Motion was written by:
Martin S. Fischer
Karin E. Lilje
They’re both scientists who studied canine movement and biomechanics, and the book is based on a large-scale research project analyzing how different dog breeds move.

One of my more recent drawings, and one of my favorites. I’ve learned to work with colors, but my heart will always belong to black and white. This is Tucker, a wonderful scrappy staffy with the biggest heart and the kindest eyes ❤️

And a side note: I’ve had multiple family members in and out of the hospital for the last month. I know I’ve been having some issues with my form responses, and people not getting my responses back to them. I only just found out this was occurring and I’m sorry for inconvenience. I will be working on this as much as I can. In the mean time, please be patient with me, and I am a single entity business and am managing a lot of situations at once. I promise I am not ignoring anyone, just trying to keep up!
