Leg dermatitis can show up as scabs, crust, swelling, hair loss, or thickened skinโฆ and the cause isnโt always obvious. Some clear with basic care. Others need targeted treatment and a vetโs help.
โข Pastern Dermatitis (aka scratches or mud fever) โ triggered by bacteria and moisture
โข Photosensitivity โ from sun exposure after certain plants or meds, affects white skin
โข Contact Dermatitis โ reaction to topicals, bedding, or irritants
โข Mites โ cause thick skin, itchiness, scabs, especially in feathered legs
โข Fungus โ ringworm or yeast mimicking other conditions
โข Vasculitis โ immune-related, can ulcerate and mimic severe scratches
โข CPL โ seen in drafts, causes swelling and skin folds over time
When in doubt, a skin culture or biopsy can help. Misdiagnosing can make it worseโespecially if you reach for the wrong ointment or steroid.
Keep legs clean and dry, avoid over-washing, and donโt guess!
Pictured: A case of dry scratches or dry heel. This horse was kept in a sandy turnout and developed painful cracks and swelling in his white legs. The sand kept the area too dry and irritated. It finally healed with stall rest and daily treatment: scrubbing, ointment, and wraps.
