Fiyero finally got to have his herd photos taken today. He’s all healed up & looking great 🥰. I will be pairing him & Elphie September 1st, so let’s hope for some fall greater tenrec babies 🤞🏼. Our breeding female lesser tenrec has yet to have any babies this year, she’s had me stumped on what’s going on. Planning a trip to the vet to attempt an unsedated ultrasound to check for any babies once September hits if still no babies by then.

Fiyero’s (Charmander) wounds have finally healed enough that he got sprung free from his quarantine cage today & moved into his permanent bioactive enclosure! Just look at the healthy pink skin 😍. Now his quills just need to grow back, which is gonna take a while. This just made my whole day 🤗.

Miss Indigo here is really holding out on me this year with her babies. She’s almost 300 grams today, but still no babies or signs of labor 😮‍💨. She’s starting to look like she swallowed a tennis ball 🎾.

*Warning, if you can’t handle images of wounds please keep scrolling*. Yesterday I received my male greater tenrec back from the breeder who has had him for months (since October 2024) & I had theirs, they accidentally got switched & mixed up during transport from Canada to the US. The owner of the male I had was coming to MD in July 2025 & we decided to just wait till then to switch them back rather than stress them with more with transport right away & spend money on ground transporters. When I received my male yesterday, I was never made aware before arrival that he was injured by a female during breeding recently & that he had 2 large infected wounds on him, which was all only being treated with some witch hazel apparently. These wounds needed immediate medical treatment, so I called the only capable veterinary practice I knew of with exotic vets on staff somewhat near me, & by a miracle they got me in immediately. I raced to them to get my boy help, they’re an hour & a half away from me so it took a bit to get them. I amso thankful to all the staff at Midshore Veterinary Service, everyone was so kind. Dr. Carl Harris saw my male & took action, he gently cleaned out the worst wound & got antibiotics for him. All the vet techs & staff were enamored with Charmander, who I’ve renamed Fiyero. A few vet assistants & techs wanted to meet him & got to hold him, he took it like a champ & has never tried to bite anyone. This boy is so sweet & outgoing. He is back home with me in his hospital cage in quarantine recovering. He thankfully takes his antibiotic like a champ, he’s going potty & eating normally, so I’m hoping his recovery will be smooth. If you’re on the eastern shore of MD, I highly recommend Midshore Veterinary Service in Easton, MD!! All of their staff researched tenrecs when they heard one was coming into the clinic, the tech that assisted Dr. Harris did more research on tenrecs as a whole than some tenrec keepers I know & impressed me with her knowledge she was able to learn in just an hour & a half before I got there. This will be my go to vet practice for my exotics.

Miss Nettle & Thornapple the tenrecs & Darling the hedgehog are here for boarding. Thornapple is recovering from a bad skin infection that left her without most of her quills, but she’s still cute as a button. I don’t often get boarding clients anymore since I moved, but when I do it’s usually these ladies 🥰. We’re enjoying the nice temps & sunny weather outside today before a full week of rain coming our way. I like to get the tenrecs out in the sun a little so they can get some natural vitamin D ☀️.

Just finished setting up my first lesser tenrec bioactive enclosure. I have 2 greater tenrec bioactive enclosures, but waited to do any lesser tenrec ones till this year as I had a lot going on last year. Love how it’s turned out. I’ll be adding some more small plants, but for now it’s looking good. Eventually I hope to have all my animals on bioactive, that’s the dream.

Update- green tie dye is sold. I’ve got some infinity pouch style bonding scarves available for $15. I had them in storage to sell at expos, but I’ve not done any in a couple years & don’t intend to do any in the future, so I’m offering them at a discounted price on here as I’m trying to clear out my stuff in storage. Shipping is $5, I can ship outside of the US it’ll just cost more & I’ll have to get a shipping quote based on location. These are great for a lot of small animals, including reptiles.

Greater tenrec babies will hopefully arrive this summer here at Quill Valley! I was planning for the fall, but decided to move up breeding them. Please fill out the tenrec pre-adoption questionnaire on my website- www.quillvalleyexotics.com if interested in a baby. Please email me at [email protected] or PM the Quill Valley Exotics page for questions on these animals. I am working on a greater tenrec care guide, I hope to have it completed by next month & available on my website. *These are not cheap animals, please keep this in mind & prepare accordingly*. I do offer payment plans, they must be paid in full by the time the tenrec leaves me.

I’ve been searching for a small ponytail palm to add into one of my bioactive enclosures for the greater tenrecs, & finally found one yesterday. Just barely fits, so I’m glad they’re slow growers. I try to make my bioactive enclosures as natural as possible. I hope Elphie loves it, she’ll wake up to a nice surprise tonight 😄.

A little bit about Quill Valley Hedgehogs & Tenrecs

Hello my name is Victoria Rodgers, I own & run Quill Valley Hedgehogs & Tenrecs. I am a small hobby breeder of pedigreed African pygmy hedgehogs (& coming soon lesser Madagascar tenrecs in 2021-2022). I am located in central MD, but more specifically Myersville, MD.

A little bit about myself & my background- I’ve owned hedgehogs for 5 years, I started my hedgehog breeding program in mid 2018. Prior to starting my hedgehog breeding program I was a small animal rescuer that specialized in hedgehogs, I was a small animal rescuer for a few years prior to becoming a breeder. I wanted to gather as much experience as possible before I began breeding, & felt like rescuing was the best way to do that, plus I would get to help hedgie’s in need.

I battle a chronic illness & depression, due to this I am unable to work a normal job. My animals have helped so much over the years while I’ve been dealing with my health issues & facing my new normal of being forced to work from home 5 years ago due to my health issues. Hedgehogs & tenrecs are great emotional support animals.

Hedgehogs & tenrecs are two of my passions in life, but I do have other passions, one of the others being my other business that is for small animal accessories & jewelry for animal lovers called Hedgie Hog Tied (can be found on Etsy & on Facebook).
