Honeybees are incredible housekeepers and recyclers! We put a few queen excluders in the yard and some worker bees have been visiting them to lift wax and propolis off the bars.

This little girl was one of several who cut the propolis away from the excluder and filled her pollen baskets (aka corbiculae). She will take it back to the hive and reuse it!

In the video you can see her using her mandibles to slice away the discarded propolis and wax. Then she adds it to her pollen basket for later use. The corbiculae is commonly used to carry pollen, but can also be used for transporting resin and recycled propolis/wax (in this case). Amazing!!

We entered honey in North Carolina’s second-largest fair and were so excited to rank in the top five! This was our first year placing and pulling frames to create a variety of honeys.

The ribbon-winning honey was for our mimosa, which has caramel and raisin undertones. It’s thick and the darkest honey we pulled all season. Local folks can swing by for it and out-of-towners may enjoy it shipped. 🍯

Winter cleaning! It’s that time of year when the bees are cleaning their hives before they huddle inside for winter. Hygienic by nature, honeybees remove as many dead or sick bees as possible before winter comes so there aren’t sick or rotting bodies in their hives.

Today was a cool day, but warm enough that the bees are flying and cleaning house. This reel shows some bees removing a sick bee from the hive so she doesn’t die and make extra work later in the season.

Intruder Alert! The bees and I were alerted by a European hornet in the apiary. European hornets are about 2-3 times bigger than the average honeybee and are very aggressive. They will often sn**ch a honeybee and carry it off for a snack. 😭

Thankfully, the one I caught in this video didn’t seem to grab anyone!

This video shows so many jobs that each of the honeybees do. I started recording first because some foragers (the oldest bees in the hive) were bringing in some pollen, which is pretty spectacular for this time of year.

Then, a cute little guard bee caught my eye followed by some sweet cleaners on the outside.

There are so many workers unseen that are doing jobs inside the hive as well. The bees stay busy all day and they are each diligently preparing for winter.

We LOVE sharing information about honeybees and letting people experience the joy of tasting different honeys!

M & M Bees recently joined the staff at New Garden Eye Care and Eyewear Gallery in Greensboro, NC, to chat about bees and offer honey tastings. It was a sweet time! 😉🍯

The staff there is amazing and their knowledge of eye care and wear is incredible. Definitely go see them! 🤓 And let us know if you’d like to have a similar experience. We love to spread the honeybee joy!

We sure had fun today at our first vendor event of the season! M & M Bees had a beekeeper in training along who also enjoyed the other vendors as well.

We recently had a hive fail and the queen either absconded or died. It had been a little while as there were no recent eggs laid. So, we made the decision to try and save the bees from the failed hive by combining them with a thriving hive right next door.

We shook the failed hive’s bees on the ground near the healthy hive and were expecting some confrontation, but the healthy hive let the neighboring hive’s bees come in without a fight!

Our theory is that the failed hive’s bees no longer smelled like their old queen AND they are mostly forager bees which are ones that can be “helpful” to the hive by bringing in resources.

Either way, there was acceptance of the failed hive by the healthy one and we were excited. It’s a beekeeper win! 🥳
