It is time.

Buckle up for the bodacious, blubbery bonanza of Fat Bear Week! The brackets are set, and voting begins today!

Thick thighs save lives. Katmai National Park & Preserve's bears have been bulking up to prep for winter. Always remember, fat bears are successful bears. There’s no fat shaming here. In brown bears, large amounts of body fat are indicative of good health and strong chances of survival. The bears need stores of fat to help them survive winter hibernation, which can last for months. While in the den, a bear can lose up to one-third of its body mass. To pack on the pounds, the bears have been gorging on the richest and most accessible foods they can find. In Katmai, that often means salmon. Let’s all take a moment to thank the salmon.

We wanted to take the time to introduce and thank some wonderful employees we’ve had helping us out over the summer.

First is is miss Logan, she moved to Washington from Colorado with a background as a veterinary receptionist. Her passion for the animals really shined bright while she was with us. And she was an amazing addition to our team. Unfortunately her time with us was cut short due to personal reasons, but we hope that if she finds her way back to Whidbey she returns to the team. We all will miss you dearly, especially miss Luna.

Next up is the lovely Kayla. Kayla is our first seasonal employee! She will be returning to college this fall to continue her education towards becoming a police officer. She has a background in 4H with a specialty in goats. Kayla has been a fantastic addition to the team and is incredibly hard working. We wish her the best luck with furthering her education and will look forward to seeing her again during school breaks!
