Dentistry webinar for owners this Wednesday evening!

HORSE OWNER WEBINAR ALERT! 📢

Join us for the first Horse Owner Education Committee webinar of 2026! Our topic will be "Equine Dentistry – A Closeup Look Inside Your Horse’s Mouth."

If you've ever wondered what your veterinarian is looking for inside your horse’s mouth, this is your chance to find out! Learn what makes horse teeth unique and why oral exams and odontoplasty, or “floating,” are performed. We’ll also review what to expect during a dental appointment, common pathologies and diseases, and how dental management will often change as your horse ages.

Registration is FREE but required. A recording of the webinar will be available if you miss the live event. Register at: https://events.zoom.us/ev/Au79KIEGlUQNYp3MIwhImixtX96-V_4BY6zUczb-JyUAmnaMAMOO~AmWA7Q-adjl446fnk29Fr5TyD20L79wemxDsn628LwZjZ4BHVqqEh-rjTA

This informative session is brought to you by the AAEP Horse Owner Education Committee.

Buyers beware! A client recently purchased counterfeit “Ulcergard” on Amazon. It is a relatively sophisticated counterfeit, from a packaging perspective. We have reported it to Amazon as well as Boehinger Ingleheim. It was administered to 2 horses in the barn, and neither horse is acting ill but we do not know what is actually in the tube. If a price seems a little too good, it probably is! One of the eventual tip-offs was *dewormer* language on the labeling, which likely means there is also counterfeit ivermectin or moxidectin out in the marketplace as well. Only purchase medications from a reputable, known distributor who has a relationship with the drug manufacturing companies.

I do not typically stock dewormers on my truck because they are easily available OTC. However, I will begin keeping a few in stock, and if you would like to place a larger order for your barn the spring, please let me know.

See pics below for packaging errors.

Thank you to best tech, office manager, and horse handler out there! Heather keeps “the office” running and keeps me safe all day long. We share a mutual disdain for selfies and large bugs on on our windows, but I managed to sneak a picture in the mirror while being threatened by a car-jacking praying mantis.

Important news for those traveling south for the winter, and for us here next fly season. This is a reportable foreign animal disease; please contact me or another veterinarian if you find an infected wound with larvae/maggots.

Reported spread of screwworm, a devastating and potentially deadly pest, into Mexico has caused the U.S. Department of Agriculture to restrict movement of horses between Mexico and the U.S., and the U.S. Federation to issue an alert and warning about the infestation.

Two busy days at the NAEP Vet/Farrier Conference in Saratoga, and I have lots to bring back for clients. There is always a focus on laminitis at this conference, and this year we spent a lot of time parsing out the endocrine pathways that predispose horses and ponies to this deadly disease. We also have new tools in our arsenal, pharmacologically, which is exciting. Ask me to show you the specimen below (laminitis vs normal) the next time I am at your barn. It’s a great tool for showing you exactly what is going on in your horse’s feet.
