💩 “It’s Just Vomiting & Diarrhea”… or is it? 👀
We get it—nobody wants to panic over a little tummy trouble. But here’s the truth:
Vomiting and diarrhea aren't a diagnosis… they're a symptom.
And they can point to a LOT of different things.

🦠 Parvovirus
☠️ Leptospirosis (yes, even in vaccinated pets)
🍗 Dietary indiscretion (a.k.a. “found a chicken bone in the yard”)
🧫 Parasites
🐾 Food allergies
🧬 Liver disease
💥 AHDS (that’s acute hemorrhagic diarrhea syndrome… it’s as intense as it sounds)
🧦 And the classic: a sneaky foreign body

Some are mild. Some are very not.
That’s why we don’t just hand out meds over the phone—we investigate. We examine. We test. We rule out.
Because we love your pets like they’re our own!

We call them foreign bodies, and while they make for wild X-rays and even wilder stories, they can also mean surgery, serious illness, or some very panicked pet parents.

🧃 “Wait... No Treats Before Surgery?!”
We know. Saying “no snacks” to your pet feels criminal.
But if your fur-baby is scheduled for surgery, fasting is actually one of the best things you can do to keep them safe.

Here’s the deal:
When pets go under anesthesia, their bodies relax (a lot). If there’s food in their belly, it can come back up and enter the lungs — a serious and dangerous complication called aspiration.
That’s why we ask you to:

✅ Withhold food after midnight the night before
🚫 Skip the morning treats (yes, even the “just one biscuit”)
💧 Water is usually OK prior to midnight– but we’ll let you know if otherwise!

Now, there are exceptions:
🐾 Diabetic pets may need a modified plan
🐢 Small exotics & pocket pets often SHOULD NOT fast
So don’t worry—we’ll guide you through exactly what your individual pet needs. We will usually go over all the at home pre-surgical instructions during our reminder calls- so keep an eye out for that phone call or Voicemail!

TL;DR: No treats before surgery = better nap, safer wake-up, happier healing.
Even if your dog insists they’re literally starving.

💚 Do you love Dr. Saslaw? We do too! That’s why we’re not quite sure how we’ll survive without her for a whole week… 😭 That’s right—you heard it from the (beardie's) mouth first 🦎—Dr. Saslaw will be out of the office until Monday, 9/2.

✨ What this means:

We’ll still be here for your cats, dogs, and pocket pets:
Our relief vet Dr. Ava is in the office Tuesday 8/26, Wednesday 8/27 and Friday 8/29-- she does not see all exotics, but some!
The wonderful Dr. Murphy will be in the office on Thursday *HEADS UP* She will be in surgical procedures until the afternoon, however she's here to help where she can!

For our exotic friends (birds, reptiles, small mammals, etc.), scheduling may be limited and or not available until she’s back.

If your exotic pet needs non-urgent care, we recommend booking after 9/2 so they can see one of the best of the best. For anything urgent in the meantime, please call us and we’ll help guide you to the right place!

Thank you for being so understanding—we’ll be counting the days until Dr. Saslaw is back! 💚

🐾 Weekly Wrap-Up Starring: Lobo the Legend 🐶✨
Everyone give a round of a-paws for our final model of the week—Lobo, adopted from our friends at and currently rocking the title of Clinic Cutie with the Most Charisma. 💚🏆

We know—we were a little extra wholesome this week...
But can you blame us? With so many adorable patients practically begging to be featured, how could we not flood your feeds with love, fluff, and wagging tails?

🐾 A Little Dog. A Big Heart. A Whole Lotta Love. 💛
This sweet little floof may be small in size, but they brought BIG joy to the clinic during their visit! With just the right amount of fluff, a calm soul, and model behavior, they had everyone on staff wrapped around their tiny paw. 💅🐕

But cuteness aside—today’s post is about something really important:

🩺 Preventive care matters.
Annual exams, vaccines, bloodwork, and even those little things like nail trims or weight checks can make a huge difference in your pet’s health.

Because small dogs?
👉 They age faster than we think.
👉 They hide pain really well.
👉 And they deserve just as much attention and love as the big pups.

🐾 Charlie Approved: Kitten Vaccines Matter!
Everyone say hi to Charlie—our little orange nugget of sunshine with a big heart… and even bigger paws to fill. 🧀💛
(We know his rainbow bridge sibling, Duncan Cheddar, is watching proudly and sending him top-tier advice from the great beyond.)

Charlie has been the best-est boy at all his visits—coming in like a pro for:
✅ All his distemper boosters
✅ His first yearly rabies vaccine
✅ And yes, he’s even got his neuter appointment locked and loaded. ✂️💼

Can we say he’s ahead of the game? We think yes.
And Charlie wants all his fellow feline friends to know:
📣 Kitten vaccines aren’t optional—even if you’re an indoor cat!
They protect against serious (and sometimes fatal) diseases like panleukopenia, calicivirus, and rabies—plus, they’re legally required in many areas. 🐈‍⬛💉

So, whether your kitty is a bold explorer or a cozy couch loaf, those vaccines?
Non-negotiable.

🐍🎶 “Come on Eileen…” 🎶
(You sang it, didn’t you? Yeah, us too.)

Meet Miss Eileen—a slithery sweetheart and certified staff favorite who’s been coming in for a few important rechecks. And we’re thrilled to say… she’s doing so much better! 🩺💚

But you know what really got us?
Her amazing pet parents didn’t just fill our hearts—
they 3D printed miniature Eileens as KEYCHAINS for her care team. 😭💕

So now Dr. Saslaw and Bri can carry a tiny Eileen with them everywhere they go.
(Even when she’s not at the clinic… she’s still with us 🥹)

We’re obsessed with her, her progress, her people, and her mini-me.
We hope you love Eileen just as much as we love caring for her. 💛🐍

🐶🐢 Sibling Goals: Zaius & Tank Edition
Wait… they’re siblings?! YUP.
Meet Zaius the German Shepherd and his totally chill tortoise brother, Tank—two of the cutest (and most opposite) siblings we’ve ever seen at Wickford Vet! 💚

Both came in for their annual check-ups recently, and honestly?
Tank finished first.
Yes, the tortoise. The actual slow one. 🐢💨
(Zaius got a few extra pokes—hazards of being a soft, squishy mammal with opinions.)

But here’s the thing:
🐾 Annual exams matter for every pet—whether they bark, hiss, purr, or slowly saunter across the floor.
✅ Weight and nutrition check-ins
✅ Oral health exams
✅ Preventive care (like vaccines & parasite control)
✅ Early detection of things you might not notice at home

Tank may move slow, but his care is just as important as his brother’s. 💅
And Zaius? He was the ultimate good boy—nervous tail wiggles and all.

📣 New Client Alert: Meet Chinni! 🐾💫

Everyone give a big warm Wickford welcome to our new fabulous friend, Chinni!
She came in recently for a check-up and absolutely killed her visit—posing like a true model during her radiographs 📸, soaking up what she thought was a full-body massage from Dr. Saslaw (we call it a palpation, she calls it luxury 💆‍♀️✨), and charming her way through the whole appointment.
But the real plot twist?
Chinni pulled off the greatest magic trick of all: convincing her mom she was a boy for FOUR whole years. 🎩✨

That’s right—Dr. Saslaw had the honor of revealing that Miss Chinni is, in fact, a fabulous little lady! 👑💖

We’re so lucky to have her as part of the Wickford Vet family. Here’s to more check-ups, cuddles, and a lifetime of fabulous girl-boss energy. 💅🐾

Not every pet loves the clinic life (even with all the treats and baby talk). That’s why Wendy & Dr. Lorenson pack up their kits and hit the road to bring top-tier vet care straight to your door!

💚 Here’s How It Works:
📞 Anyone at the clinic can take your info and add you to our House Call List.
But the real scheduling ✨queen✨ behind the curtain?
That’s Wendy—our House Call Coordinator & Tech Extraordinaire. 💅💉

She personally crafts each route to make sure no one's pet is waiting while we crisscross the state like we’re on a scavenger hunt.
She’s keeping us on time, efficient, and headed in the right direction (because East Providence ➡️ Wakefield ➡️ North Kingstown? That's Just Chaos)

Once you’re scheduled, Wendy and Dr. L get rolling and bring the clinic vibes to your living room or bathrooms. ✨

🗓️ House Calls Happen on Wednesdays Only
Services include:
✔️ Annual Exams (and yes, Dr. L checks everything—eyes, ears, knees, tails)
✔️ Vaccines
✔️ Bloodwork
