Charleston Animal Society

Charleston Animal Society Since 1874, our mission has been THE PREVENTION OF CRUELTY TO ANIMALS. YOUR Charleston Animal Society is celebrating 151 years of protecting animals.

We are SC's first animal organization & an international model of lifesaving success. In addition to caring for homeless animals, from hamsters to horses, adopting them into new homes, and reuniting the lost with their families, the organization responds to animals in crisis as a result of both man-made and natural disasters. The comprehensive shelter medicine program not only provides direct serv

ices for as many as 1,200 animals in our system of care at one time, the shelter veterinarians also spay or neuter upwards of 10,000 dogs and cats each year and they provide emergency medical services to critically ill and injured animals arriving at the shelter daily. The Hank & Laurel Greer Lifesaving Raffle presented by Crews Subaru closes at 1:00 PM on October 22nd, and we still have a long way to go if we want to sell out and reach our critical lifesaving goals.

As of today, only 1,288 of 4,000 entries have sold—which means you have better odds than ever to win one of our incredible prizes:
🚘 2025 Subaru Ascent
💰 Cash prizes of $10,000, $5,000, and $2,000

But more importantly, every raffle entry sold helps us save more lives.

Just last week, a Good Samaritan rushed a pregnant Carolina Dog—nicknamed Miss Yellow—to our shelter after finding her behind a grocery store dumpster. Without immediate action, both her and her puppies’ lives were at risk. Thanks to your support, in spite of the incredible amount of animals currently in our care, our veterinary team was able to perform an emergency cesarean section, safely delivering five beautiful puppies.

Today, Miss Yellow and her babies are recovering, and their future looks bright—all because of lifesaving efforts powered by community support through fundraisers like this raffle.

🎟️ Don’t wait—enter now at CharlestonAnimalSociety.org/Raffle and help us close out this raffle and save countless lives in the process!

Calling all homeschool families!

Does your child have aspirations to become a vet? Is your kid fascinated by science? Do you know any students who want to learn more about helping animals?

Our Vet for a Day Homeschool Program will cover all of these things and more! With 2 separate sessions and slightly different activities based on age, all participants will have the opportunity to observe surgery, assist with animal recovery, interact with animals, and gain insight into the daily life of a veterinarian.

Homeschool sessions are very popular so these programs will fill quickly! To learn more or reserve your spot, visit https://charlestonanimalsociety.org/homeschool-program/

We were happy to get Holly Bokash's update on Doughboy, who has been a little under the weather (kennel cough!) and is fortunately doing much better, thanks to Holly's, and boyfriend Brandon's, tender care. She told us, "Doughboy is now named Howie and seems to be adjusting well to it! We said a bunch of different names and he responded to that one the best, so he kind of chose it himself - HA.

He unfortunately has had kennel cough that started the day we adopted him on Sunday. He was incredibly sick Monday and Tuesday, so we visited you all twice to get him medication those two days, but yesterday and today he's doing MUCH better. His energy levels have changed, and he's showing us his personality, which has been nice to see.

He's been adjusting well, even while sick. He wouldn't go up our stairs, so we carried him the first few days, but he has now figured them out! We think he was kennel trained because he sleeps in ours, and we don't even close it. He has been eating regularly and LOVES being outside, just lying in the grass observing our neighborhood. I've spoiled him a lot with toys - he's a big fan of his yellow ducky and banana.

Luckily, my boyfriend and I were able to work from home the last three days to be with him, but today is the first day he is home alone. I also work for a nonprofit, Ronald McDonald House Charities of Charleston, as the Marketing & Events Manager, and our Capital Campaign for our expansion project's groundbreaking is today, so I hope to come home to a smiling boy once it's over! I think he'll do great."

Check out the third photo of Howie on the aday he was adopted. Is that a happy dog, or what?

Seriously, just ask anyone at Charleston Animal Society. Or ask the lovely person who is fostering me and trying to find me a home. They will say that I am truly a special, incredible, fantastic mutt!!! So it makes me sad that everyone has passed me by and I've been available for so long. No one can understand it. But if you decide to meet me, you will hear RAVES from everyone!

Here's what the people who know me write about me:

"With a name as dreamy as Aurora Lane, it's no surprise this girl is pure magic. She's the kind of dog that makes everything feel a little softer, a little sweeter. Aurora walks nicely on leash, knows sit, paw, and even *other* paw (because she's polite like that). She's smart, mellow, and affectionate-and while she's not super into other dogs, she's perfectly content doing her own thing or hanging with a calm, respectful pup who gives her space. Aurora's heart belongs to her people. She's loyal, independent, and so easy to love. Whether you're out for a quiet walk or curled up on the couch, she'll be right there, soaking up the moment with you. Adopt Aurora Lane, and you'll gain a best friend who brings calm, joy, and a whole lot of heart into your life."

So, what do you think? You could at least share me with your friends, right? They will thank you later.

Aurora Lane is currently in the Adoption Ambassador foster program. Foster families take animals that are available for adoption into their homes and try to get them adopted.

All adult dogs are free to adopt!

Meet Damien, a sweet, playful pup with a big heart and a touch of quirkiness. He's still finding his confidence in the world and would benefit from a calm, well-mannered dog friend to show him the ropes. Damien has a vibrant personality that shines through once he feels safe, mixing loyalty, goofiness, and a playful spirit that keeps life fun. While cats make him a little nervous, he's happiest when surrounded by kind humans and canine pals who can help him grow. Damien is looking for a patient home where he can continue to blossom into the loving, devoted companion he's meant to be. You can find Damien at Charleston Animal Society on Remount Road in North Charleston!

All dogs 1 yr and older are FREE to adopt! Come see the amazing dogs waiting for you!

With a name like Waffle Ego, you know this boy is serving up sweetness with a side of goofy charm. Though a little older, he still has plenty of pep in his step and happily keeps up with playtime, walks, and adventures. True to his name, Waffle Ego brings joy wherever he goes, greeting people with a warm, friendly personality and a loyal spirit. Around other dogs, he can sometimes be a bit pushy in his play, but it all comes from his eagerness to connect. Once he feels comfortable, his goofy, affectionate side shines through, making him a faithful companion who will fill any home with laughter, loyalty, and love. You can find this fella at Charleston Animal Society on Remount Road in North Charleston!

Your Charleston Animal Society is in crisis. Right now, over 200 dogs are in our care — and we’ve run out of kennel space.

Dogs are in temporary crates, as we work to make more space. Adoptions are the only way we can make it through this crisis.

Starting this weekend, large dogs one year and older are free to adopt. Please, open your heart, adopt today, and share this message.
