There have been MANY positive wild animals over the last couple weeks in Franklin County. Foxes, raccoons, and skunks. We know because we are cutting off their heads and submitting them to the state lab for the county. If you see us suited up in full protective gear in the back of the clinic, that is what we are doing! If your animal is not up to date on their rabies vaccination, they are at risk of contracting rabies which is 100% fatal to animals and humans. If your unvaccinated animal is exposed to a rabid animal, unfortunately they may need to be euthanized.

The rabies vaccination is safe and VERY effective if given to an animal BEFORE they are exposed to rabies... PLUS Franklin County runs free rabies vaccination clinics. Next week Dr. Tracy will be in North Bangor for one of these clinics (one of the last ones this year). If your cat or dog is not up to date on their rabies vaccines we STRONGLY encourage you to go. Stay safe Franklin county! Get your animals vaccinated and no snuggling wild animals please!!!!

What a cute little patient!! Pictured here is our vet student Sarah helping administer plasma to a little cria who didn’t get enough colostrum from her mom. Her mom unfortunately didn’t let her nurse when she was born. While this is rare to happen, this farm jumped right in and made sure this little girl got everything she needed to thrive. Because colostrum (or first milk) contains all the antibodies a baby cria needs to fight off infection, if they don’t get it the only way to give them antibodies is administering a blood product that contains them like plasma. We are so happy little Ember is doing well so far. Fun fact: when an alpaca gives birth it’s called- “unpacking”!

Unfortunately rabies is on the rise in Franklin County this year. You can get your dog and cat vaccinated for for free at one of the clinics hosted by the Franklin County Public health department. Additionally, livestock species can get rabies too, and should have a rabies vaccine given by a veterinarian once a year. If your animals are not up-to-date and are at risk for coming in contact with wildlife, we recommend calling us today to discuss rabies vaccination!

Appointments are required.
