Meet Sunflower. 🌻
She has been with us for almost a month now. I waited a bit to introduce her because I wanted time to really get to know her first and she’s a special case.
This beautiful mare came to us extremely defensive to back and side pressure due to how she was previously started. Underneath it though, you can tell she is incredibly sweet, just scared and unsure.
This first month has been focused less on “doing” and more on helping calm her nervous system, build trust, and learn that pressure does not have to mean fear or conflict. We are slowly working toward being ridden again, but only when she is mentally and emotionally ready for that step.
The first few photos are from her assessment session and about a week into training. The last few pictures are from the her most recent sessions. Today I ALMOST rode her ba****ck lol.
She now:
• wears a ba****ck pad calmly
• stands quietly next to the mounting block
• accepts back pressure much more softly
• allows me to “pretend mount”
• is beginning to relax and think through situations instead of reacting
I’ve been using a mix of pressure/release, confidence building, nervous system regulation, and some R+ style training with her. This is such a good example of my Christ Centered Horsemanship philosophy: slowing down, listening to the horse in front of us, and building trust and understanding before expecting performance.
She has already made so much progress in a short time, and I truly believe there is a wonderful horse in there.
Sometimes slowing down and building the foundation is what creates the most lasting results.
Stay tuned to watch her journey. 🌻
