This is Calypso, she lives with other dogs and they, unfortunately, are porcupine regulars ๐Ÿ˜ž

On this chilly morning, lets dispell some porcupine myths and learn some things about these creatures:

1. Cutting quills doesn't make them easier to remove
2. Unfortunately, dogs don't learn a lesson when they have been quilled. Their instinct and past experiences may actually increase their risk of getting quilled again.
3. Porcupines sleep/rest in trees!
4. Porcupines cannot throw their quills. They release them when something threatening comes in contact with them.
5. Porcupines aren't aggressive, but will defend themselves if they perceive danger.
6. Porcupine quills can migrate under the skin and through tissue. They can cause abscesses behind the eyes, rupture critical blood vessels, and puncture lungs months after a dog is quilled.
7. When your dog is quilled, we will do an examination on them, sedate them with a reversible sedative, monitor them and pull the quills. We will do our best to remove all of the quills in their entirety to prevent future issues. Sometimes this requires surgery. There are times we will not be able to get all of the quills. In which case we will have you monitor them and sometimes the quills will work their way out rather than in. We send them home on anti-inflammatory/pain medication, but often skip antibiotics because if there are embedded quills, we would like them to abscess outwardly rather than migrate further into the patient.

We're seeing hints of Spring, and that means that ticks are going to be on the move. Also, we want to protect our pets from intestinal worms and heartworm. If our pets get Intestinal worms, they can share some of them with their humans. We've got a special on Bravecto (three month flea and tick) and Sentinel (monthly heartworm and the broadest spectrum of deworming) for the next six weeks! If you purchase a year's worth of Bravecto and Sentinel (same size range), all under one pet, you get $100.00 off! That is getting three months of flea, tick and heartworm prevention for free! Happy Spring!

๐Ÿšจ Public Service Announcement ๐Ÿšจ

Save This Life Microchip Company has gone out of business! If your pet has a microchip from THIS company, you will need to re-register it with another provider.

Not sure what brand your petโ€™s microchip is? Weโ€™re happy to scan it for you anytime to check!

โญ๏ธPlease note: This is NOT the microchip brand our hospital implants, we use HomeAgain microchips. If your pet was microchipped here, their registration is still active. However, it is still always a good idea to check and make sure your phone number and additional contact information are up to date!

It's hard to know how to help when disaster strikes, whether you're just down the road, across the country, or on the other side of world. Donating to reputable disaster relief organizations is relatively easy, if you know who they are. The American Veterinary Medical Foundation (AVMF) is the charitable arm of the AVMA. They have disaster relief programs for individuals and businesses, as well as other support opportunities. You can choose where you want your money to go. Consider a donation, one time or recurring, and help those who need it most!

Through AVMF, your generous gifts help support the medical care of injured or abandoned animals, disaster relief efforts, education, scholarships for technicians and veterinary students, and research to help prevent, diagnose, and treat animal diseases.
