Building confidence one step at a time 🧠🐾

Took Duck to Home Depot today to continue working on something much bigger than obedience, confidence.

Duck is a nervous and skeptical guy when it comes to new environments, so we’re taking everything at his pace. No rushing, no forcing, just helping him learn that the things he’s unsure about aren’t as scary as they seem.

Today that meant working through the automatic sliding doors. The noise and movement were a little concerning at first, so we spent time walking in and out, letting him process it, and with each repetition getting a little less reaction and a little more confidence.

We also tackled the metal steps, helping him learn to go up and down comfortably instead of avoiding them.

Confidence isn’t built by avoiding challenges, it’s built by working through them successfully. Every small win adds up. 💪🐶

Teaching Valor the most important command he’ll ever learn 🧠🐾

Today we’re working on name recognition with Valor.

A lot of people think teaching a dog their name means repeating it over and over. In reality, I want his name to mean “pay attention to me.”

So instead of saying it when he’s already focused on me, I’m waiting for him to get distracted, look away, or become interested in something else. Then I say his name and reward the moment he chooses to turn back and engage.

That’s how a name becomes valuable.

Before a dog can learn commands, they first have to learn that paying attention is worth it. 💪🐶

Welcome Duck 🐾🦆

Duck is joining us for a Board & Train, and while he already has a nice foundation in obedience, our biggest focus will be building confidence and independence.

Duck is a bit of a nervous guy, so a lot of our work will be helping him learn that the world isn’t such a scary place. Through training, exposure, and positive experiences, we’ll help him become more comfortable making decisions, exploring new environments, and handling situations with confidence.

Of course we’ll continue building on the obedience he already has, but for Duck, confidence is the key that will unlock everything else.

Excited to get to work with this handsome Dalmatian 💪🐶

Patience first, speed second 🧠🐾

Working with Marshall at Ashley Park on two very important skills: a long down and a recall around distractions.

The down stay teaches patience, impulse control, and trust. The recall teaches speed, engagement, and choosing me over everything else happening in the environment.

Both are important. One teaches a dog how to stay put, the other teaches them when it’s time to move.

A reliable dog needs both ends of the spectrum — calm enough to wait and focused enough to come when called. 💪🐶
