Do you have a dog that goes with you everywhere you go?

Rain or shine, my Aussie, Lucy, is by my side! She stays outside of the horse pens for safety reasons, but she feeds horses with me and waits outside the fence while I train ❤️

I’m so happy with the progress this filly made over the 30 days I had her! I wish I had taken more videos of how skittish she was when she arrived. She came so far in such a short amount of time!

Today’s progress with “Shining Armor” AKA Excalibur ⚔️

So a little backstory on the video on the video I posted earlier today…
Excalibur has been consistently leading pretty well for the last few days, so this morning I took him out to our bigger (fenced) pasture. He was doing really well walking over ground poles and leading around. He was very relaxed and my guard was down. I went to the bridge with no intention of getting him on it, just to let him see it. I stepped up on it with my left foot and and he was okay, but when my right foot (the one wearing the boot) stepped up, it made a different, louder noise and Excalibur absolutely freaked out (horses 🙄😅). I really just wasn’t ready for it and he pulled away from me, so of course when I got him back and took him to the roundpen, he kept trying it. So that’s when that other video was taken.

We worked through it and I put him back in his pen, but he was back to being extremely fearful of everything — like small noises, movement, his own shadow, etc.
I let him have a hay/water break to decompress, then this evening I got him out for another session, kind of expecting it to be pretty rough. He had a few half-hearted attempts to pull away from me, but quickly realized that wasn’t the answer. After some groundwork in the roundpen, we worked on opening/closing gates and sending through.

I took him back over to the bridge and we worked through that as well. Not only did he get over the sound of two different boots walking on it, but he also ended up walking across it himself!

That was a bit of a long update, but I just wanted to provide some context for the other video I posted and share how we ended today. Excalibur has been pretty tough, but I’m happy with the progress we made from this morning to this evening.

All that to say… horse training is most definitely not all sunshine and rainbows. There have been lots of days where I’ve felt utterly defeated. But staying the course and celebrating the small wins has always paid off. I’m also incredible thankful for all of my trainers and mentors who have helped me along the way 🤍

This is the first ounce of curiosity/personality I’ve seen out of Excalibur!

He’s been completely shut down and fearful for the 3 weeks I’ve had him. I’m so happy to see him starting to come out of his shell!
