There is a young female macaque named Momo-chan whose fur is almost the exact warm colour of the orange toy Punch loves so much. Maybe that is why he keeps drifting toward her, sitting close, watching her. To a baby who found his comfort in one warm colour, she must feel like something safe come to life.

We are always drawn to the colours that once kept us safe.

The keepers go home when the sun sets, and the enclosure falls dark and quiet. But Punch is never truly alone at night, because the one friend who never leaves stays curled in his arms until morning. A toy from a furniture store became the reason this orphaned baby finally sleeps in peace.

The thing that stays through the night is the thing we trust the most.

One small flower pushed up through the cold grey ground, and Punch found it immediately. He leans in, sniffs, studies it this little spot of soft colour in a world that's mostly stone. The smallest beautiful things never escape his notice.

The gentlest hearts always find the one flower in the concrete.

It starts small and then takes over his entire face — the mightiest yawn a tiny body can produce. Punch is, frankly, exhausted from the hard work of being a baby, and he wants everyone to know it.

Some days the biggest event is a really, really good yawn.

He has stopped trying to make her hold him. Instead, Punch has learned to take the smaller miracle: simply being allowed to sit beside her, close enough to hear her breathe, close enough to pretend, for a moment, that he belongs to her. She doesn't move away. Today, that is everything he could have asked for.

When you can't have all of someone, you learn to treasure the nearness.

For weeks, Punch sat on the edge of everything, watching a family that did not yet want him.

He was small, motherless, and unsure how to be a monkey at all. And then something gentle happened. One older male in the troop began coming closer, grooming him softly and staying near him when the others would not.

That one bond changed everything. Where there was once only loneliness, there is now a big protective friend who treats this little one like his own.

Sometimes you do not need the whole world to accept you. You just need one soul to decide that you matter.

That orangutan toy was never just a cute comfort blanket. It was chosen on purpose.

The keepers tried rolled up towels and other stuffed animals first, but they settled on this one for a reason. Its long hair and easy grip points let Punch hold on the exact way a baby macaque grips its mother.

That grip is not only for comfort. Clinging like this builds the arm and hand muscles a young monkey needs to climb, and its monkey like shape was meant to help him rejoin the troop one day.

So every time he hugged that toy, he was not just soothing his heart. He was quietly growing strong enough to one day survive without it.

Before Punch was famous, he was just a freezing newborn nobody was feeding.

His mother could not care for him, and on that hot but cruel day his tiny body was struggling. Then one of the keepers noticed him, scooped him up, and tucked him straight inside his own jacket to keep him warm.

For days after that, this young man barely went home. He stayed at the zoo through the nights, bottle feeding the baby every two hours, again and again, the way a mother normally would.

The world fell in love with a viral monkey months later. But Punch was alive to become famous at all because someone chose to love him first, quietly, when no one was watching.

When you've been let down early, trust comes slowly. Punch eyes the offered hand the way he eyes everything now, half-expecting it to pull away. But it doesn't. It waits, open and patient, until his little fingers finally close around the food. One more small lesson learned: not every hand leaves. Some of them stay to feed you.

Healing is just learning, slowly, that not everything will hurt you.

This is the spot where they used to sit together, where for a little while he wasn't the only one. Now the space beside him is empty, and Punch keeps coming back to it anyway, looking down the path, waiting. He's still so young, and already he knows the particular ache of a place that used to hold someone.

The hardest empty spaces are the ones that were once full.
