A BIG thanks to Dr. Kelly Schaefer, Schaefer Veterinary Service, for being a guest in our ARSC 260L Equine Care and Management class!

Students gained valuable hands-on experience by assisting and observing a variety of veterinary procedures: lameness eval, dental care, drawing blood, vaccinations, and observing a surgical procedure.

Experiences like this help bridge the gap between classroom and industry, giving students practical skills.

Thanks again to Dr. Kelly for sharing your expertise, answering questions, and giving students practical experience and confidence while learning directly from an experienced professional!

2024 Graduate, Associate of Science in Equine Studies, NHSC
Certified Therapeutic Riding Instructor (PATH International), 2025

I graduated from New Town High School in 1998 and returned to New Town in 2022 to pursue an Equine Studies degree at NHS College.

In 2021, after recovering from a back injury, I was finding my way back to riding and had reached out to Joe Reum about helping me work with one of my horses. Around the same time, I came across a Facebook post about Equine Assisted Services offered through Healing Horse Ranch in partnership with the college. After visiting with Joe and meeting Katie I made up my mind to go for it!

Iโ€™ve been a lifelong horse enthusiastโ€”I ride for enjoyment and simply love being around horses. For over 20 years, Iโ€™ve also worked in human services, supporting individuals with developmental disabilities. Combining these two passions had always been a dream of mine, and in May 2025, I made that dream a reality by founding Journey Equine, LLC in Stanley, serving Mountrail County and surrounding areas.

Journey Equine, LLC is a year-round provider of Equine Assisted Services (EAS). We partner with individuals facing physical disabilities, cognitive challenges, and emotional needs. Through structured, horse-assisted activities led by trained professionals, we promote emotional awareness, build confidence, improve physical function, and support meaningful personal growth.
Looking ahead, we are excited to expand access to our services and developing skilled professionals in this field. This is just the beginning of our journey.

My time at NHS College has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life, and I am incredibly grateful for everything it has given me.

Working on softness, balance, and a quiet sliding stop with feelโ€”

In ARSC 252: Natural Horsemanship โ€“ Building a Relationship, Santos Casarez III and Mike are working on transitions, impulsion control, and developing a quiet sliding stop through seat, timing, and communicationโ€”not force.

Notice Mikeโ€™s relaxation through the topline and Santos staying centered and intentional with his body. Santosโ€™ hands stay soft as he rides the stop with his seat and bodyโ€”not by pulling on the reins.

The goal isnโ€™t just stoppingโ€”itโ€™s creating a horse that stays mentally connected, balanced, and willing through every transition.

Good horsemanship happens in the small moments:
soft hands, balanced posture, clear intention, and timely release.

Great work, Santos and Mike!
