$10 Handicap Class
A Great Producer... and a Great Question

Dearest Readers,

Every once in a while, a submission lands in our inbox that isn't about bad ground, bad producers, or bad sportsmanship. It's simply a question worth discussing.

The person who sent us this made one thing very clear: This is not a dig at the producer.

In fact, they praised the event, saying the ground was excellent, the facilities were great, everything ran smoothly, and the producer did an amazing job. They even told us they won money, so this isn't coming from someone upset because they didn't place.

Instead, they wanted to ask the barrel racing community about one particular class.

The race offered a $10 handicap/schooling class, advertised for horses that needed a confidence-building run, were coming back from injury, trying new tack, futurity horses, or simply needed a "real run" before the Open. (Love the name, btw 😏)

According to the advertisement and the submission, the format worked like this:
☕️ Pay $10 and make a run.
☕️ If you like your time, you can pay the Open entry fee and carry that run into the Open.
☕️ If you don't like your run, you can pay another $10 and run again.
☕️ Repeat until you're satisfied, then carry over the run to the open you want - or don't.

The question raised to us isn't about the race itself. It's whether this format creates an even playing field for everyone entering the Open.

The submitter told us they watched riders make multiple attempts in the handicap class before carrying over the run they wanted into the Open. They also stated that many of the top Open placings reportedly came from carry-over runs out of that class.

On one hand, you could argue that the opportunity is available to anyone willing to enter.

On the other hand, if one rider gets multiple opportunities to dial in the perfect run before paying the Open entry fee, while another enters the Open and only gets one chance, does that create an advantage?
Some competitors may view it as smart strategy.

Others may view it as a "glorified expo" that allows riders to effectively buy extra attempts before competing for Open money.

Again, this isn't about whether anyone broke the rules. From everything submitted to us, the class was run according to its advertised format.

The bigger question is whether this is a format the sport should embrace.

Should riders be able to make multiple $10 attempts and carry over their best run into a $100 Open?

Or is it simply another strategic option that competitors should understand before they enter?

We're curious where producers, professional riders, and contestants stand on this one.

Fair game? Or does it unintentionally create an uneven playing field?

Always Observing,
The Bettys ☕️

I don’t do this often but people are absolutely off their rocker.

YOU ARE NOT ENTITLED TO ACCESS TO SOMEONE 24-7 because it is a business.
Have compassion.

When calling this lady back after she accused me of being a scam- I explained I just had a little one and with taking care of my kids I couldn’t answer since 8am this morning via phone call. She literally called me a bitch and told me I shouldn’t be working if I can’t handle it.

1. This is why we don’t do last minute rides and require reservations.

2. This is why reading is a fundamental life skill.

3. Compassion and integrity go a long way.

We don’t accept Venmo. I was going to accept my husbands Venmo- to help this woman out. She flies off the handle when not answered. Oh and apparently I’m going to get blasted on social medial also. Only a few more months of offering trail rides, and when it’s over I will be SO HAPPY. And when there’s one less area you can call to ride horses understand- that this is exactly why.
