At Trails End Animal Rescue, we never turn away an animal because of its medical needs. Every life deserves a chance, and we work tirelessly—without local, state, or federal funding—to make lifesaving care possible.
Last week, we rescued eight 10-week-old puppies from South Texas who were scheduled to be euthanized. They arrived tiny, underweight, and heavily infested with fleas, ticks, and intestinal parasites. After a five-hour round trip, our amazing volunteers immediately went to work bathing them, vaccinating them, deworming them, and removing fleas and ticks by hand.
As the days passed, the puppies grew stronger—except for one little guy.
We named him Hercules.
Despite around-the-clock care, and extra love, he suddenly became gravely ill. Dr. Spencer at Chisholm Trail Veterinary Clinic New Braunfels diagnosed him with Parvo, immediately hospitalized him and began aggressive treatment. We rushed the remaining puppies to the vet, despite showing no signs of the illness. They were all proactively treated with a PARVOVIRUS ANTIBODY INJECTION, which has a 93%-100% survival rate. They are all in good health.
Hercules fought hard, we prayed hard, but he was so tiny, just 4 lbs. Little Hercules didn't make it.
From the minute he left that South Texas shelter, Hercules knew he was safe, he was cared for. He was surrounded by people who fought for him every step of the way. We held him in our arms, whispered to him, and while we couldn't save his life, he knew he was loved. Run free, sweet Hercules. You were deeply loved, and you will never be forgotten. 💙
We all know the horror stories of Parvo. Recently a nearby shelter euthanized dozens of animals when, it’s said, Parvo swept through the building. Thanks to ANTIBODY TREATMENTS, PARVO NO LONGER IS A DEATH SENTENCE, but treatment is EXPENSIVE!
We still have hospital bills for Hercules and ongoing care for the rest of the litter. If you'd like to help us continue giving animals like Hercules every chance possible, please consider donating, fostering one of our fully vaccinated adult dogs, volunteering, or applying to adopt at Trailsendtexas.org.
