BCHS is a nonprofit animal shelter serving the homeless dogs and cats of Brown County, Indiana.

We also offer resources to help residents keep pets in their homes including low-cost spay/neuter. BCHS strives for a community where all animals are valued and treated with respect. All animals that come to the shelter are re-homed, regardless of how long it takes and no animals are euthanized due to lack of space or funds. We hold the Brown County Animal Control contract, but we are not a government agency and receive no funds from any national animal welfare organizations. Our community outreach program has reduced the number of animals coming into the shelter by 49% and the BCHS has been nationally recognized as a successful rural shelter with an outstanding save rate of 99%, compared to a national average of 60%.

Miss Kitty Needs Your Help

Miss Kitty is about to lose her second foster home. Her current foster is unable to keep her after Sunday, November 8th. We’d love to see her find her forever home before that happens, rather than bring her back to the shelter.

Miss Kitty may be 12 years old, but she’s proof that you don’t always have to act your age. She loves to play with her favorite toys, jumping and pouncing, and she enjoys interaction with her people. When she’s worn out, she’ll snuggle up next to you or settle at your feet for gentle scratches. She also loves to be brushed to maintain her gorgeous looks, and her long fur is incredibly soft.

Miss Kitty’s fosters say that she’s loved all the people she has met, including children. However, while Miss Kitty loves her people, she isn't thrilled about sharing them with other animals. She is tolerant of animals who give her space and don't want to be besties.

ADOPTION SPECIAL - SENIORS FOR SENIORS

As we get older, the decision to get a new pet can be a difficult one. Are we active enough? Is itfair to adopt a pet that could be a 10+ year commitment? Yet we still long for the companionship a pet provides. That’s why senior pets can be a great match for older adopters.

Just like people, senior pets come in a variety of ages and activity levels. Some are still quite active; others may have slowed down or even have some medical needs. Some are the life of the party; others prefer a quieter life. They each have their own, distinct personalities and, just like us, they deserve to be loved.

From now until November 15th, adoption fees are waived for any senior citizen over 65 years who adopts one of our senior dogs or cats. These seniors are currently looking for a home where they can spend the rest of their lives providing love and companionship.

UPDATE - As of Friday evening they have temporarily fixed our line and we do have phones again. It may be a bit spotty until the final fix is completed so please just be patient with us!

The shelter phone and internet are out until at least Friday afternoon!!

Rip is a gentle giant with a sleek black coat and soft brown eyes, happiest keeping his people company without needing to be the center of attention. He gets along well with other dogs and has a silly side that comes out in the occasional burst of zoomies, though he’s a little timid and looks to his person for reassurance when something new comes along. Rip just wants a comfortable home and people he can count on, making him a big, handsome buddy with a whole lot of love to give.

BROCK - 19 months at the shelter and still waiting.

Brock is ready for the Halloween season, but he's having trouble deciding on the right costume. Which do you think suits him best?

Truthfully, all Brock really wants to be for Halloween is to be an adopted pet. Can you make that dream come true?

Ophelia is a playful cat who enjoys rolling around with toys and watching birds. Ophelia takes some time to warm up to people and tends to be pretty independent, but with patience and time she does enjoy gentle pets and companionship.
