I took Dagny to a sunflower field this weekend at the Wooden Shoe Tulip Farm and scored this gorgeous photo of my girl with my OG favorite flower.

Then we came home and visited OnPoint Animal Wellness (AKA PetMotion Veterinary Rehabilitation Centers - name change in the works?) because I suspected an injury that she was hiding.

Turns out she's got one hip injury that turned into two because she's been overcompensating for the injured one, so she's now on a rehab exercise program and will be going in for shockwave therapy and xrays.

I will never not advocate for OnPoint, because most vets would have handed me Rimadyl and told me to wait and see what happens. The Rimadyl would have masked the pain, she would learn to deal with the chronic pain over time, and nothing would be resolved. OnPoint searches for the cause - and Dr. LeFave finds it very quickly in my experience - and then has a treatment plan ready lickety split.

Dagny is 5, and I don't want masking pain meds. I want her to heal and recover. OnPoint is spendy, make no mistake - but they're worth every dime. I've been taking Dagny there for almost 2 years now, and I've been delighted with them the whole time.

Izzy is a nervous girl, but aside from some suspicious side eye, she did so good in the salon! 👀

I took no offense to the close supervision while I was filing her nails, it's always good to make sure your service provider is doing their job correctly.

The Importance of Regular Nail Trimming (or Dremeling) for Dogs

When it comes to grooming, most people think of brushing, bathing, and haircuts, but nail care is just as important. Keeping your dog’s nails at a healthy length is about more than looks. It’s essential for their comfort, mobility, and long-term joint health.

How Often Should You Trim?

A good rule of thumb is to trim or dremel your dog’s nails every 2–4 weeks.

Some dogs grow nails more quickly and may need trims closer to every 2 weeks.

Others may naturally wear their nails down through activity and can go closer to 4 weeks.

Puppies benefit from frequent, gentle trims so they get used to the process early on in life. This is why it's important that their breeder begin regular nail trims from birth.

Consistency is key, long gaps between trims allow the nail’s quick (the blood vessel inside) to grow out, making it harder to keep nails short and comfortable.

Why Nail Care Matters

Overgrown nails aren’t just "long nails" they can cause serious issues:

-Discomfort & Pain: Long nails press into paw pads or twist toes unnaturally.

-Joint Stress: Dogs may change how they walk to avoid pressure, which can strain joints and ligaments.

-Injury Risk: Nails that catch on carpets or crack can be painful and may even need veterinary care.

What to do if you're not sure?

Reach out to a dog salon and schedule a nail trim or dremel. Sometimes they may be able to show you how far back you can go, and recommend a nail schedule to help keep them short and comfortable.

Poppy is off to a camping trip, so she got an easy short maintenance trim - but not too short!

3/8" is as short as you want to go, because it's easier to maintain but will still provide some protection from the sun and environmental things she may run into, like stickers and brambles. It will also keep her skin and her immune system healthier than if we went with a shorter length. ✨️

Klaus lost his pattern on this visit 😭

Puppies go through a coat transition between 8 and 18 months (Klaus is now 9 months old), when their coat goes from a simpler puppy coat to their adult coat. This is a time of lots of matting, and sometimes it gets a little out of hand.

I saw Klaus 6 weeks before this visit and brushed him out - but this time, the matting was tight and everywhere. It's not worth brushing out because it would have been painful for him, and it's just hair. He's 3/8" all over except for his head, which I did brush out since it was a small section, and it would have drastically changed his look to shave his face.

Hair grows back, so dematting a puppy's entire chest, underline, and all four legs was unnecessary. He's a boy free from mats, and we'll reset his pattern the next time he comes in ✂️

Watch out for toxic blooms!

Watch out for toxic blooms!

Treasure Valley dog owners, please take note. Cynobaceria harmful algae blooms found at:

-Blacks Creek Reservoir in Ada County
-Cascade Lake (Blue Heron) in Valley County
-Cascade Lake (Van Wyck) in Valley County
*Brownlee Reservoir in Washington County (health advisory)
-Anderson Ranch Reservoir (Lime Creek) in Elmore County
-Magic Reservoir in Blaine County
-Little Woods Reservoir in Blaine County
-Salmon Falls (Greys Landing) Reservoir in Twin Falls County
-Salmon Falls (Salmon Fall Creek) Reservoir in Twin Falls County
-Murtaugh Lake in Twin Falls County
-Thorn Creek Reservoir in Lincoln, Camas, Gooding Counties
-Little Camas River in Elmore County
*Hells Canyon Reservoir in Adams County (health advisory)

*health advisory issued
-Blooms have been detected below advisory levels, but conditions can worsen with warm weather before official updates are posted. Dogs are more vulnerable than humans, so we recommend they avoid swimming.

If you look across a body of water and there appears to be pea-green slime, bright-colored “moss”, or bright green circles across the surface, this is toxic algae. If it is windy, the algae blooms may have been temporarily pushed to the shoreline; however, this doesn’t mean that the water is safe to swim in or drink. These blooms can kill your pet!

I've been grooming Theo since he was a young guy, and I always enjoy our visits 🐾

He comes in every 6 weeks or so to keep his floof manageable at home. The amount of coat he loses each visit still astonishes me.

Got back to grooming after a lovely 10 day trip to Ireland! This is Canelo 🐾

My grooming schedule is now Tuesday-Friday from 8am -8pm with a max of 6 dogs per day depending on size and not including nail trims. This may vary depending on schedule needs for both my clients and myself.

Everyone has been great about this transition, so thank you very much. I was so nervous about dropping Saturdays because I didn't want to disappoint anyone, but I simply needed to do it for myself and my business.

For now, it's back to my regular overworking program 🐾✂️🤣

See you soon!
