Sometimes truth is stranger than fiction.
On Sunday morning, Carolina Canine College received a call from Tamroc Kennels. They had a couple whose dog needed boarding, but because the dog did not have his canine influenza vaccine, they couldn’t accept him. Since we do not require that vaccine, they kindly referred the family to us.
When the couple arrived, we quickly realized we had a language barrier. Every conversation happened through a translation app, but we were able to get the information we needed, settle the sweet little guy in for the night, and even sent his report card in Spanish.
The next afternoon, when his owner returned, he first asked where he could have the dog neutered. Then, through the translator, the conversation took an unexpected turn.
He quietly explained that someone had given him the dog, he worked long hours, and he simply could not keep the dog. He asked if we would please take him.
After talking it over, Kim and I agreed that Carolina Canine College would help. The gentleman paid for the dog’s boarding stay, surrendered the dog to us, and left knowing we would find him a wonderful home.
So we introduced him to Facebook.
About an hour later, the phone rang.
The call happened because one of our wonderful clients, Douglas Martin, happens to know the woman who saved this sweet boy. Through his Facebook feed, the dog’s rescuer recognized him immediately and reached out. Thank you, Douglas, for unknowingly helping connect all the pieces of this incredible story.
The caller had driven all the way to Lexington County just two weeks earlier to save this very dog from the euthanasia list. She had lovingly named him Bogey and, believing she had found him a wonderful family, had rehomed him on Saturday.
By Sunday, he was boarding with us.
By Monday, he had been surrendered.
After a long conversation, we agreed that Bogey would return to his rescuer while both of us continue searching for the perfect forever home. Carolina Canine College also offered discounted daycare whenever she needs a helping hand.
This sweet boy has had quite a journey in a very short time.
At the shelter, his name was Mug. His rescuer named him Bogey. Around here, he became Churro, because he is just that sweet.
No matter what name he answers to, he deserves one thing above all else: a family that will love him for the rest of his life.
