Winter has officially hit our little homestead, but that does not mean our chickens have slowed down in the least.

Most people don't realize that 1st year chickens don't stop laying in winter. They are producing enough energy to keep laying eggs. As they age and beginning their molts is when the production of eggs start to slow.

This year we have almost 25 first year laying hens. Our egg production has not slowed down in the least.

And we are happier for it.

Watching sap boil is almost as bad as watching paint dry, but so much to do while we wait for it to boil down.
