I will do anything for him…. We truly are in Huey’s final days. His mind is completely alert and his body continues to fail him. He’s gotten stronger and can walk around. His appetite is phenomenal but his body cannot absorb the protein.

He barks when he wants to be held. He always pacifies himself licking my arm while he sits in my lap. It’s the only place he wants to be.

Oh Huey …. ❤️

Unexpected trip to the vet. Mr Wigglesworth had two seizures back to back tonight. He came out of the quickly. He’d had one after his dental and one a few months ago - but two in a row and now he’s on meds. He is battling dementia and has limited vision so this was very scary for him. Hoping the meds will keep it under control.

Oh Huey … Huey just isn’t well. He’s been losing weight so we switched to puppy food. He still wasn’t getting better and was eating less so to the vet went. Huey either has PLE or PLN (losing protein) to which there isn’t a cure. He got a steroid injection and his appetite was good for a day but then back to not eating. He’s on rabbit protein and seems to be doing well so far.

Prayers for this sweet monkey and his momma’s heart are greatly appreciated. He is very much of his momma’s world - sleeping with her and sitting on her lap while she works.

Our sweet Dan has had a cough that just wouldn’t go away. He’s got an enlarged heart so we’ve started the meds and what a difference it has made. Rather than just morning zoomies, he does mid-afternoon zoomies! It’s so nice to see him living his best life for however long he has! We ❤️Dan!

We’re here for the community….

We got a message that Princess (12 y/o.. deaf/blind) Chi x Pug (?) needed to be immediately be moved from her foster home. She arrived at the ranch confused and anxious. Our gang is welcoming but not overwhelming and let Princess discover / decompress on her timeline. She found the water, kitchen, and p*e pads so we’re off to a great start! She’s starting to seek attention / kisses and being a lap puppy.

We’ve still been helping interview potential fosters but fearful she’d end up back with us and have to start all over again if it didn’t work out. Since we’re already set up for blind / deaf / seniors, we’ve committed that Princess P can live out the rest of her years with us and her Doxie / Newfie family.

Any donations for Princess P’s care can be made to Paws Rescue Inc.

Our sweet Peanut (17.5 years) crossed the rainbow bridge yesterday after her deterioration from dementia. Peanut was known as Tippy-Tap from the sound of her nails on the floor.

She found her way to us through Darla Ludwig who rescued her. Peanut immediately took to me and was a love bug on her terms. She would come to my desk every morning when she was ready for her Morning Kisses. It was our way of taking a quick break to start the day off right.

She loved the “I’m gonna get you” game as she would scurry around the house.

When Peanut arrived, we noticed that she had Sun Downers and would walk the house throughout the night. As her dementia progressed, she would trap herself in places like under tables, in electric cords, and behind the sofa. She was becoming a danger to herself so she would spend the night in the laundry room until it was time to release her from her physical body.

Ollie spent the day in bed with her. While at the vet, she laid in my arms giving me kisses (which she hadn’t done in months). This was not goodbye - just see you later ❤️.

Dementia is so evil as it steals their spirit and personality. I realized we’d been mourning the loss of our Peanut for quite some time.

I still listen for her nails on the floor and look around to make sure she’s safe…

It’s been a while since my last post, always staying busy!

Dementia is one of the hardest conditions with which we have at the Old Weiner Ranch. Both Mr. Wigglesworth and Peanut suffer from dementia. Poor Peanut has really been affected last night and today. She was actively walking all night with Sundowners and dementia kept forcing her under tables, behind crates, and getting tangled in cords. Just when I thought I’d moved everything, she started all over again - about 3 hours worth. Finally, I moved her into the laundry room with a baby gate so I could still hear her. She cannot get tangled or trapped but still allows her to walk like her mind tells her. She has a bed, p*e pads, and water but it’s controlled chaos for her safety.

She’s been on the trot all day today! She doesn’t recognize me today - only focused on walking.

It’s so difficult to see them have these days. I’m so thankful that they don’t ever seem to have this at the same time. 💔

Update: her bloodwork came back good with the exception of slightly raised kidney values. We’ll recheck those in a month. We’re changing her food to puppy food and feeding 3x daily. I also believe that her Sundowners is burning more calories at night so going to try a sleeping pill at night.

Morning vet visit for Peanut. She’s been losing weight but eating ravenously. Hoping for something simple!

Adding a video of Peanut cruising around the room. She’s not much for being held.

We’ve had too much going on these past few weeks! Since Kranker’s ER visit and passing, we’ve had two vet visits and one surgery! I love our vet but I feel like we need to have a punch card for free services!

It’s so difficult trying to balance what we can treat at home versus what requires medical intervention while trying to hold off the angel of death.

I do all of this because I believe in the difference that is made in their lives and our rescue community. But, the physical, financial and mental burden is real!
