Liberty Ranch Canine

Liberty Ranch Canine Liberty Ranch Canine provides Dog Training and Handler Training for you and your canine companion.

Brian VanDePutte has over 15 years of canine training and handling experience. Starting with 5 years of active duty with the United States Marine Corps. During that time he participated in the Military Police Canine Handler’s course and later went on to attend the Department of Defense (DOD) Specialized Search Dog Course. His time in the military greatly benefited his knowledge of canines. After a

ctive duty Brian went on to train canines for a company contracted to provide IED Detection Dogs for the Marine Corps. Not only providing superior canines but training the marines who would handle them on the battlefield. He then worked with a non-profit, H4HUS, that provides veterans with Equine and Canine assisted therapy. He developed the Canine Handling Immersion Program which helps veterans work through issues using canines. Brian has continued an active role in sharing his canine knowledge with both Military and Civilians to help everyone have a better relationship with their furry companions. There are so many ways to have a great relationship with your dog from working with them on basic obedience, which in turn builds trust, and respect, to fun activities like throwing a Frisbee, scent detection activities, and taking them through fun obstacles like in a canine agility course. In general, if you give your dog some mental stimulation through task training and overcoming challenging situations, your dog will start to work to please you in anticipation of their next reward instead of trying to assert their dominance and rule the roost.

Introducing our 3 newest board and trains for this month. Two have been through our day training program, it’s always a pleasure to watch these pups grow up!

Sergio is definitely one of the biggest pups we’ve had to train!

But no matter the size, our standards stay the same. Clear communication and consistent training are what allow us to build those first steps into true neutrality. Here you can see Sergio putting in the work, holding position and staying engaged even around the goats.

Baker is getting ready to head home soon! He has been working on his leash manners, gentle greetings, basics obedience, and so much more these past 4 weeks. We’re wrapping up with some trips to town, and planning his go home.

As Baker finishes his program, we will have one final board and train opening for April, beginning April 6th. If you’ve been considering training, this is a great opportunity to secure a spot before the month is fully booked. Feel free to reach out for details or to reserve the last availability!

Meet Chelsea…

Chelsea is one of the most caring and selfless individuals we know, but what truly sets her apart is how that heart translates into her work as a dog trainer. Her compassion is structured, informed, and rooted in leadership. She understands that loving dogs means providing clarity, consistency, and accountability — not just affection.

Through her upbringing around dogs, hands-on rescue work, and continued mentorship at Liberty Ranch Canine, Chelsea has developed an impressive depth of knowledge. Do not be fooled by her age — she is a wealth of understanding. When asked a training question, her answers often mirror exactly how I would respond. Many times, she even brings thoughtful perspectives that expand the conversation further.

Chelsea studies the “why” behind behavior. She observes the small details, anticipates challenges, and meets each dog as an individual while maintaining clear standards. Her rescue experience has strengthened her patience, resilience, and ability to handle complex cases with steady confidence.

She is teachable, driven, and deeply committed to doing things the right way. Chelsea is not just an asset to Liberty Ranch Canine; she is part of its foundation and future.

Hug your friends, family, animals as often as you can…you never know what life will throw your way.

Last Friday, February 27th I was making an effort to shred our pasture with hopes and dreams of building a nice nature preserve focusing on constructive dog activity and a place for clients and the community to come engage with their dogs through nature trails and dog specific obstacles, activities, and secure areas for people to let their dogs off leash to stretch their legs and have fun with their dogs instead of the same old boring walk around the neighborhood to just “check the box”.

Well, God had a different agenda that day for whatever reason. While shredding the pasture, my tractor caught fire sending the pasture blazing as well. Tri-Lakes Volunteer Fire department responded along with numerous other emergency personnel to try to control and extinguish the fire. Unfortunately, one of those volunteer firefighters, Jeff Derrick, passed away while battling the fast moving flames. I hate that it happened, I hate that Firefighter Derrick lost his life that day, and I hate that his family, friends, and community are mourning this loss. As we all grieve and battle this hate toward the dreadful situation we are faced with, I have to remember to trust that God has a plan, I just wish I knew what it was and why. For whatever reason, God put Jeff Derrick in my life, a man I am only now meeting and learning about since his passing. I couldn’t forget him now if I tried, and I will always think of him as I live in gratitude of what God has given to me.
We all have to keep fighting evil, keep pushing towards the light at the end of the tunnel, extinguish the hate and discontent with life’s challenges and instead ignite passion and COMpassion. I hope I can add meaning to Jeff’s death in whatever God’s plans are.

All gave some, and some gave all.
