If you've ever come home from a walk feeling more stressed than when you left, this one's for you.

A lot of these dogs are overwhelmed the second they leave the house. Pulling, scanning, reacting to everything, forgetting you exist entirely once the environment gets louder.

Your dog isn't hopeless.

They have no coping skills yet.

That's why we spend so much time building calmness and emotional regulation in real places, not just running obedience drills in the living room. 🐾

How is your dog on walks?

Memorial Day Weekend Pup Cups from ! 🐾💛 A little rain isn't stopping us from getting outside and practicing calm, real-world dog training here in South Jersey!

We stopped by Brendan T Byrne State Forest
for a hike before stopping for a treat. A lot of people think dog training only happens during obedience sessions, but so much of it is actually learning how to settle in new places, exist around distractions, and enjoy life with your dog without everything feeling like chaos.

Hi! It’s been a little while since I’ve re-introduced myself here 🙂

I’m Sharon, the owner of The Well Mannered Dog in Mount Holly. I spend most of my time working with anxious, overexcited, reactive, or just generally chaotic dogs.

If you’ve been feeling frustrated with your dog lately, I really hope you know you’re probably not failing nearly as badly as you think you are.

A lot of dogs are not trying to “be bad.” They’re overwhelmed, overstimulated, overexcited, or they just never learned how to slow themselves down and exist calmly in the world yet.

If walks feel stressful, your dog struggles to settle, loses their mind around distractions, or makes you feel like you can never really relax out in public with them, that’s a lot more common than social media makes it seem. Most people are just trying to enjoy a walk, sit outside somewhere, or bring their dog places without it turning into chaos.

The really cool part is that dogs genuinely can get better at that stuff over time, and a lot of times it's quicker than you think!

I brought my board and train dog Blue out with the camp crew, .i.g.g.i.e , Pepper, and MJ, the other day and it was really fun seeing him show off all of the progress he’s made already. Watching dogs start making better decisions and settle into the environment more naturally will never get old.

What have you and your dogs been up to lately? 🙂🐾

Dogs that do best in the real world are not the ones that are so excited to get out to just run and play.

They are the dogs that have practiced slowing down, following direction, and existing calmly in different environments.

That’s a big part of what we work on at camp.

Not hiking and running until they're tired,
but helping them build better habits, better social skills, and better emotional regulation with real distractions. Today we saw cars, people, dogs, and dirt bikes!

No dogs with me for this stop on the way home, but it’s important to slow down and enjoy the scenery sometimes too.

A lot of the training I talk about comes back to this idea, being able to actually relax and enjoy being out in the world instead of feeling rushed all the time.

Today felt like a good reminder of that. 🐾

There are so many dogs that would probably love going places if it didn’t feel like an absolute chore every time 😅

What’s your dog’s version of “yeah… absolutely not” right now? Car rides? Seeing other dogs in public?

Love this idea! So many people And their dogs not quite at a point where they can just take their dog to any store or to get ice cream.

At Salty Paws Stone Harbor, we believe all dogs are GOOD dogs!
Sometimes our good dogs just prefer a little space—and that’s PAW-fectly okay. And for our sweet pups navigating their golden or hospice days, comfort matters more than ever.

That’s why we’re now offering 15 minute private shopping appointments for reactive, hospice or “just because” dogs.

Give your pup a calm, stress-free, and trigger-free experience where they can explore at their own pace—sniff out new toys, enjoy a delicious ice cream or cookie, and simply be a dog.

Because every dog deserves a shopping trip made just for them!
