Let's talk Parvo 🦠
As we move into spring, we are seeing an increase in canine parvovirus cases in our community. Parvo is not a typical stomach bug that a dog can simply outgrow or fight off through natural grit. The virus is exceptionally hardy, remaining infectious in soil or on surfaces for years.
Core puppy vaccines introduce the immune system to the virus in a controlled environment. Without these vaccines, a puppy has no real biological defense, and the virus moves faster than the body can react—typically leading to catastrophic consequences. However, protection must also continue into adulthood because immunity is not a permanent state. Over time, a dog’s antibody levels can decline, which is why maintaining a relationship with a general practice veterinarian is vital to keeping your pet’s health and defenses strong.
With that said, we know that life is unpredictable and things happen. Whether a vaccine was missed or the virus simply found a way through, we know the most important thing is getting your dog the help they need, as soon as possible. 💚
