Our client, Andarna, is just like most dogs: not particularly excited about baths or blow dryers. Sheās only a year old, and weāre able to have a dog stay in the bath tub and feel as best as possible about aversive things like grooming by using the tools we know and love here at Speaking Dog is Ruff.
Want help with your dogs grooming routine? Book an in-home session with us today. Link in our bio. Andarnaās mom even learned where the nail quick is and how to cut to prevent cut nails from bleeding.
Donāt forget to watch & share our brushing tips video!
Speaking of tips:
You may not think consent with dogs or body autonomy is a thing, but in fact it can help dogs get through scary or aversive things like grooming.
Extra tips from a Behaviorist:
1. Talk your dog through the actions youāre taking and where you are going to or are touching them. Ex: āAndarna, Iām going to brush your left side now.ā
2. If your dog doesnāt want one paw or area touched aka they pull away when you do that area: move to a different area and come back to it.
3. Let your dog see you do the action on yourself that youāll be doing to them, first, and name it for them.
Why would we talk to a dog that much? Studies show dogs can learn upwards of 1500 words! They know what weāre saying. Knowing that fact, and teaching dogs vocabulary can ease their fears and build a stronger relationship with our dog.
Ever feel like your dog just knows or is listening? Itās because they are! How could this knowledge change your relationship with your dog? Curious to know more? Reach out! Access the link in our bio! We love helping build dog and human connections.
