You know those baskets or big bowls of plants? You can get them for Mother’s Day, sympathy, and other holidays? I’m not saying they can’t be done right, but most of the time the plants they put in there are ones that should never go together because they have DIFFERENT GROWING PREFERENCES 🤯🤯

So what happens for you is that you get it and it looks great for a while, but slowly it starts to kind of look icky and sad. Not to mention I have yet to see a mixed planter with drainage ☠️ 🫠

And then the worst part… you think it is your fault!! Because perhaps it was the first time you were given an indoor plant and you didn’t know any different. So then you think you kill everything and avoid having indoor plants which add so much to a space and do so much to relax your mind. 😥

Let’s change that!

This one was brought in to me and the customer was actually doing really well with it, but it was a matter of time before it started to go downhill. Succulents and ivy do not grow in the same environments. I got them separated out for her and then put the ivy with something that has similar light and water requirements because she liked the look of mixed plants.

Okay I think I finally did it this time!! The plant your house is DEFINITELY missing is…. A banana plant!! 🍌🐒

These can produce real, edible bananas in the right conditions! They like warm temperatures and lots of light. They are self-pollinating so you only need one to start growing your own nanners.

Little story from this week:
A customer came in shopping for a small plant for a little container she was putting together. We looked at a few options but we weren’t finding the one. I finally suggested the peperomia pictured. She looked at it and decided it would work. When I was ringing her up, I was telling her about peperomias and how this one is called ‘hope’ and why it’s one of my favorites. She then shared that what she was working on was for a donation basket for a cancer benefit. She hadn’t known when picking it out that was a peperomia ‘hope’ and I didn’t know her reasons for needing a plant that day.

It just felt like one of those moments that was bigger than me and that is one of my favorite things about being a shop owner and getting to connect with people. And I also wanted to share that when we share our experiences with each other, the world gives back this really great energy. That’s one of the reasons why I started Madi-Do Flowers and why I know I’m doing something great.

With that being said, one of my very favorite plants are back at the shop! We have 4” peperomia ‘Hope’ in right now. 4” pots, $18. Second pic is what they look like all grown up. They’re totally a texture thing for me. And I love the chunky vines. 🥰

Let’s talk about variegated alocasias and the dreaded white leaf!

Noticed this white leaf yesterday when watering. 😱😮 Bad, right? Maybe you’ve seen videos where they are like “omg chop it off RIGHT NOW!!!!!”

Please don’t chop it off!
1. Look how pretty it is! That plant worked so hard to make that leaf 🥹
2. The plant’s tissue influences variegation. Just removing a leaf you don’t want doesn’t change the tissue where the next leaf will emerge from in alocasias.

And maybe you’re like, “Wait, what’s wrong with white leaves?” Well, it’s not really a wrong or right, but white leaves don’t contain chlorophyll which means they don’t contribute to photosynthesis which means they don’t contribute any energy to the plant. Essentially, they are pretty freeloaders. 👸

Typically, I see all-white leaves on plants that are getting lots of light. They are able to sustain a white leaf because the green parts of the plant are able to compensate for the white due to so much good sunshine. ☀️

So for this plant. You can see I have lots of green on the other leaves. Yes, I have a white leaf but I’ll keep an eye on the plant. Chances are the next leaf will have some green, too!

And if it doesn’t.. and I keep getting white leaves.. I would protect the green leaves by making sure it is in optimal growing conditions. The cool thing about alocasias is even if you lose all the leaves, there is a good chance you can regrow the plant because they sprout from corms (bulbs).
