This happened to a patient of ours recently on a hot day…like today. Fortunately, this dog’s owner quickly recognized something was wrong and brought their pet in to see us for immediate emergency, life saving care. This was a dog that was happily playing in the yard at home and was overcome by the heat, and quickly became dangerously ill. We usually see this syndrome as a consequence of a pet accidentally being left in a hot car, or tied out in the sun…but it can also happen very fast to a dog just doing too much when it is too hot. Please, be careful out there!

PLEASE be very careful with your pets in this heat! The NWS Seattle WA has issued a heat advisory from Noon on Tuesday until 10 PM Wednesday. Leave your dogs at home and walk them early in the morning or late evening when it is cooler. Don’t forget paw pads can be burned easily on pavement. Remember if you feel hot…your dog feels much hotter! And…the sad reality is, once you recognize your dog is over heated…it may be too late to save them.
