✨🐾Prince Vinny the blue Devon Rex passed his genetic testing!👏 Vinny was an import from Russia. We did find some bacteria in his upper respiratory PCR and he is currently in quarantine and under treatment. The good news is that the bacteria found is treatable! The reality is that finding healthy breeding cats is NOT an easy task. Many will come with various diseases, bacteria’s, and protozoans. Some I can treat and others I cannot. When viruses are found that are lifelong, I have to make difficult decisions as they can have long lasting effects on the kittens. Health is always my top priority. And many times, not all cats coming in will make the cut. But this boy, after treatment will make a phenomenal stud. Next stop is his HCM scan before clearance.🩷🐾✨

Such a horrific story! Thankfully, someone was able to report the conditions and these cats were able to be rescued. Scenarios like this continue to reinforce the importance of proper quarantine protocols when new cats arrive, the importance of health testing (HCM scans, DNA testing, and PCR testing for infectious diseases,) the importance of infectious disease control, small group housing, and evidence based practices. Not doing what looks cute on video, what makes a great Facebook story, or what people want to see. Health focused breeding is making the hard decisions, letting the cat go when its health doesn’t support breeding or impacts the lives of future kittens. Making the investment to do PCRs on every cat not after problems arise. It’s being proactive not reactive. Mentorship needs to continue to be encouraged, the gatekeeping needs to stop, or worse blame of mentors for another breeders actions. That only reinforces more cases just like this. Mentorship is sharing knowledge, experiences, and guidance but mentors cannot enforce other adult breeders to do what’s right. It’s an insane claim to try to tell the public that mentors are telling new breeders to neglect their cats. This only creates fear for seasoned breeders to share their experiences for the betterment of the breed. And y’all if you come across a breeder where you see first hand abuse or neglect, please report it.

“Hi! Are you calling about a Sphynx or Devon Rex kitten?”

Karen: “Is it giving ethical?”

Me: Actually attempts to explain our health testing, HCM screening, PCR testing, licensing, registrations and asks what specifically she means by ethical.

Karen: “GIRL, IF ITS THIS HARD TO ANSWER THE QUESTION I THINK THAT SAYS ENOUGH!

Me: Literally, answered the question 😂😂😂

Karen: “DON’T BE TYPIN NOTHER PARAGRAPH.”

Karen: “MAKE IT SHORT.”

😭😭😭

Ma’am… YOU CALLED ME.

Apparently tonight’s cattery lesson is that ethical breeding practices should be comprehensive, transparent and thoroughly documented…

…but the explanation must fit inside a fortune cookie. 😂

Anyway, Karen has been released back into the wild.

No kittens were harmed during this ethical interrogation. 🐾

✨🐾 There will always be opinions. Then there are experiences.

“After spending hours upon hours researching Sphynx breeders with the United States, there was one that continued to stand out, which was Think Sphynx. As a veterinarian, the decision to acquire a Sphynx was not made lightly or quickly. Calla puts the care and wellbeing of her kittens and queens above all else. My first point of contact to Calla came with detailed questions. I was met with quick, friendly, and detailed answers. The entire process of obtaining our kitten was smooth, but extremely detail oriented. Again, Calla is always incredibly responsive. Our kitten is amazing and the perfect addition to our family.
