I’ve had a lot of people ask me about our feeding routine lately so I thought I would make a post about it! I know feed is always a hot topic in the rabbit community, but this is just what’s been working for us :)
Pellets - We feed ADM PenPals Show 16% for all life stages of our rabbits. This nutritionally complete feed makes up the bulk of their daily diet. Adults get about 1/2 cup per day, and nursing mothers and babies are free fed. We have been feeding ADM for a little over a year now and have had excellent results. Our rabbits are well fleshed and conditioned, even from a young age. We have experienced virtually zero weanling enteritis since feeding this.
Hay - We free feed orchard or timothy grass hay to all of our nursing mothers, babies, and young juniors. Adults are given hay 1-2x a week. For our show team we will slightly reduce hay intake leading up to a show so that when hay is given during travel they will eat more eagerly.
Supplement - We ONLY supplement individual animals that need to gain or finish condition, typically mothers coming off litters, rabbits getting into show condition, and rabbits that are molting. We will also supplement pregnant does about 1 week prior to due date to help with milk production. We feed a textured supplement like Omolene or Heinold TNT for this purpose, about 1/2 - 1 TBS 3-5x a week depending on needs.
Veggies/Herbs/Fruit - We feed fresh foods maybe only 1-2x a month as a special treat. (Adults & older juniors only.) We will also offer greens during long show trips to help keep our bunnies eating. Their favorites are romaine, kale, spinach, parsley, cilantro, dandelion, raspberry leaves, apple, and banana.
