Dew Claws: What You Should Know

Thereā€™s a lot of mixed information out there about dew claws.

After speaking with multiple reputable veterinarians, weā€™ve learned theyā€™re more than just ā€œextra toes.ā€
Theyā€™re connected to tendons and play a role in a dogā€™s movement and stability.

Some dogs may never have issues if theyā€™re removed.
But others can develop discomfort or long-term changes as they age.

Thatā€™s something we take seriously.

Not all dew claws are the same either.
The ones that are tight to the foot are typically not a long-term concern.
Loose ones can have a higher risk of injury and just need to be managed properly.

We choose to keep them.

Not because itā€™s easier
but because we believe in preserving structure and focusing on proper care.

We donā€™t remove them. We manage them.

It was a busy day sending these precious little pups home. The last pup will head home on Wednesday. I canā€™t thank my husband enough for taking on the task of taking care of them this last week and sending them home while Iā€™m off with the big dogs trying to get some hunt test passes!! I wish all my puppy parents the best in their new journey!
