Flor Y Raíz MKE Flor y Raiz imagines a world where access to fresh, clean water and fresh, culturally appropriate food is a right—not a privilege.

Where families feel connected to their roots, communities, and the earth/water through the food they grow, eat, and share.

Hola comunidad, hello community.

Faisal Bhimani has generously agreed to let me host a free seed give away and fundraiser at his BP tomorrow from 1-3pm. The seeds are from last year that I bought off fb market place from someone, all Livingston brand but they should still work for this year. 🙂 I made sure to remove invasive seed packs.

We will be selling limited amount of tamales, churros, and horchata to help raise funds to do pay what you can seedling sale so families in underserved communities can grow some of their own culturally appropriate food this summer to help with food sovereignty, cultural connection, food as medicine, and community connection. Some funding we were planning on is no longer available so we are trying to fundraise so we can still do the programming this summer.

Thank you all if you’ve read this far and would love to see you this Sunday for your free seeds.

Comment below what you’re excited to grow this summer. I’m excited to grow blue corn the three sisters way. ♥️

Hola comunidad! (Hi community!)

Watch till the end to hear her celebrating her accomplishment. ✨🥰✨

We’d love to hear your favorite part of gardening in the comments below. 👇

Friends and family suggested I share about how my 3 year old and I garden together in our micro urban farm, so here goes nothing. (Intro post on why I pivoted career paths from biomedical engineering, the meaning behind our name, our mission and goals coming soon).

How does growing in a micro urban farm with a toddler work? It’s messy, not picture or social media perfect, and slow but there’s so much discovery, exploration, learning, and intentional joy.

This video shows my toddler doing soil blocking by herself. I didn’t have our usual paint scraper to take off excess soil readily available so my toddler made it work with one of her play kitchen tools in this video. Although the tool she used is not ideal because it scrapes the soil blocker, I let her show me her process because her excitement and love for teaching was more important in that moment than correcting her.

After finishing recording and celebrating with her off camera I gently explained we could not use the tool she used anymore and we should continue to use our paint scraper and explained why.

Not shown in this video was the process of how my toddler used different steps of prepping our custom soil mix to do sensory play. I also didn’t record her putting in the tiny seeds into the soil blocks because I’m not used to recording our process 🤪🫠🙈 She used a tooth pick to carefully put one seed per 3/4inch soil block which helped with her fine motor skill development, patience, and focus.

If you want to continue to see videos of our real and intentional journey, please like and comment and follow our page. Thank you for joining us we’re so excited to grow together with you all and plant the seeds of change together una semilla (one seed), un jardín (one garden), una familia (one family), y una comunidad (one community) at a time. ✨♥️✨
