Winter didn’t knock…it kicked the door in. Yesterday’s snowstorm turned the whole yard into a frozen playground, so me, Roscoe, and Myles bundled up and went out to check on the high tunnel. This is the part of gardening folks don’t always see—the cold days, the quiet days, the days where you still show up because the work doesn’t stop just because the weather flipped a page.

So consider this my soft launch into Vlogmas: the holiday season through the eyes of a gardener, a dog mama, an auntie, and a woman growing food in a Wisconsin winter. From snowstorms to cozy kitchen days, from high tunnel check-ins to holiday garden magic…we’re rolling.

Let the behind-the-gardener holiday season begin.

Day 1 of 30: Why You Should Start a Garden

I came across a post telling people not to even try growing their own food… and honestly, that didn’t sit right with me.

Every gardener you see now started with ZERO experience. Nobody just woke up knowing what they were doing.

Gardening isn’t something you learn by watching from the sidelines. It’s something you learn by getting your hands in the soil, making mistakes, and figuring it out as you go.

You’re not “wasting resources” you’re building a skill that can feed you and your family for life.

Start small. A few containers, a couple herbs, one raised bed whatever you can manage. It doesn’t have to be perfect, it just has to start.

And yes, support your local farmers too.
Both can exist at the same time.

Don’t let anyone discourage you from learning how to grow your own food.

If you’ve ever thought about starting a garden, what’s been holding you back?

Reason 8 of 30 Why You Should Start a Garden

Because food tastes different when you grow it yourself.

I’m not even exaggerating.

A tomato you grew at home? Completely different.
Fresh lettuce you just picked? Crisp, flavorful, actually satisfying.
Herbs straight from your garden? Next level.

It’s not just about freshness… it’s about connection.

You planted it.
You cared for it.
You watched it grow.

So when it’s finally time to harvest, it feels different. It means more.

Even if it’s something small, like one pepper or a handful of greens, it hits in a way store-bought food just doesn’t.

That experience alone will make you want to keep going.

What’s something you’d love to grow just to taste the difference?

Reason 6 of 30 Why You Should Start a Garden

Because one small plant can save you more money than people realize.

Fresh herbs at the store can be expensive, and sometimes you only need a little at a time. Meanwhile, many herbs are some of the easiest things to grow at home.

Think about it:

• basil for pasta, pizza, and salads
• cilantro for tacos and fresh dishes
• parsley for soups and sides
• mint for tea and drinks
• chives for potatoes, eggs, and more

A single herb plant can keep producing for weeks or even months with proper care.

Sometimes people think they need to start with a huge garden, but the truth is one plant can be the beginning of everything.

Start with something simple. Start with something you actually use.

You might be one basil plant away from changing your kitchen and your grocery bill.

If you started with one herb plant today, what would you choose?

Reason 5 of 30 Why You Should Start a Garden

Because sometimes it’s not just about growing food it’s about growing peace. We live in a time where a lot of people are stressed, overstimulated, and constantly pulled in a hundred directions. Gardening gives you something real to focus on.

There’s something calming about:

• watering your plants
• checking for new growth
• getting your hands in the soil
• stepping outside for fresh air
• watching something thrive because you cared for it

A garden can become more than a place to grow vegetables. It can become part of your routine, your reset, and your quiet place.

Even if you only have a few pots on a porch or windowsill, it still counts.

Sometimes the harvest isn’t just food… it’s peace of mind. What helps you slow down and reset these days?

Reason 4 of 30 Why You Should Start a Garden

Because gardening does not have to take as much time as people think.

A lot of people want to grow their own food, but talk themselves out of it because they assume it requires hours of work every single day. The truth is, a small garden can fit into a busy life.

Sometimes it looks like:

• 10 minutes watering in the morning
• checking on your plants while you’re outside
• harvesting something fresh for dinner
• a little cleanup here and there

That’s it.

You do not need to spend all day in the garden to be successful. You just need consistency.

Start small. Choose a few things you actually eat. Build a routine that works for your schedule.

Even a few minutes here and there can turn into fresh food, new skills, and something you’re proud of.

What would you grow if time wasn’t the thing holding you back?

Reason 3 of 30 Why You Should Start a Garden

Because you do not need a big yard to grow food.

I think a lot of people delay starting because they believe they need acres of land, a huge backyard, or some picture-perfect setup first. That’s simply not true.

People grow food every day in:
• containers
• grow bags
• balconies
• patios
• front porches
• small raised beds

You’d be surprised how much food can come from a small space when it’s used wisely.

Sometimes the biggest thing holding people back isn’t lack of space… it’s waiting for the “perfect” conditions.

Start where you are. Use what you have. Build from there.

A few herbs, tomatoes, greens, peppers, or potatoes can be the beginning of something much bigger.

What kind of space are you working with right now: yard, patio, balcony, or containers?

Day 2 of 30: Why You Should Start a Garden

I’ve been seeing a lot of people say gardening is too expensive to even start… and I really need y’all to not let that discourage you.

Yes—gardening can get expensive over time.
But it does NOT have to start that way.

You don’t need thousands of dollars.
You don’t need a fully built setup.
You don’t need to do everything all at once.

You can start with:
• a simple pot or container
• a small bag of soil
• a few seeds or even kitchen scraps

That’s it.

A lot of us didn’t start with abundance… we built it over time. One season, one lesson, one upgrade at a time.

Don’t let someone else’s fully established garden make you feel like you can’t begin.

Start where you are. Build as you go.

What’s something you already have at home you could start with?
