Did you know there’s only 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗹𝘆 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝗵𝗼𝗿𝘀𝗲 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗲𝘀 left on Earth?

Meet the 𝗣𝗿𝘇𝗲𝘄𝗮𝗹𝘀𝗸𝗶’𝘀 𝗵𝗼𝗿𝘀𝗲, a rare and endangered equine native to the sweeping grasslands of Mongolia.

For decades, scientists assumed these sturdy little horses were just descendants of early domestic breeds. But modern genetic research revealed something far more fascinating: Przewalski’s horses are 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝘀 of today’s domestic horses, having split from a shared ancestor 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝟱𝟬𝟬,𝟬𝟬𝟬 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀 𝗮𝗴𝗼.

So what makes a horse 𝘸𝘪𝘭𝘥 instead of 𝘧𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘭?

A 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝗵𝗼𝗿𝘀𝗲 has 𝘯𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳 been domesticated by humans. A 𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗵𝗼𝗿𝘀𝗲—like North America’s mustangs or Australia’s brumbies—descends from domestic horses that escaped or were released and later formed free‑roaming populations.

Today, only about 𝟮,𝟬𝟬𝟬 𝗣𝗿𝘇𝗲𝘄𝗮𝗹𝘀𝗸𝗶’𝘀 𝗵𝗼𝗿𝘀𝗲𝘀 exist worldwide. Thanks to dedicated conservation programs, they now live in protected reserves and national parks in Mongolia, as well as in carefully managed breeding programs in zoos and conservation centers around the world.

𝗙𝘂𝗻 𝗙𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗙𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗮𝘆 🐕💭💫

Have you ever noticed tiny wet paw prints left behind when your dog walks across the sidewalk on a warm day? Those little footprints may actually be a sign that your dog is sweating.

Unlike humans, dogs don't sweat through most of their skin. Instead, they have special sweat glands called 𝗲𝗰𝗰𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗴𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘀 located in their paw pads. These glands release small amounts of moisture that help regulate body temperature, especially during hot weather or after physical activity.

While sweating through their paws provides a little extra cooling, dogs primarily rely on 𝗽𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 to release heat and keep their bodies at a safe temperature. Those damp paw prints are simply a small part of their cooling system at work!

As temperatures continue to rise, it's important to remember that your dog's paw pads are sensitive to heat. Hot pavement, asphalt, and concrete can quickly become hot enough to cause discomfort or even burns. A good rule of thumb: if the pavement is too hot for you, it's too hot for your dog's paws.

So next time you spot those tiny wet footprints on the sidewalk, you'll know they're more than just cute—they're a fascinating part of how dogs stay cool! 🐶☀️

𝗙𝘂𝗻 𝗙𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗙𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗮𝘆 🐱💭💫

Have you ever noticed the little fold of skin at the base of your cat’s outer ear? This fascinating feature is commonly nicknamed 𝗛𝗲𝗻𝗿𝘆’𝘀 𝗣𝗼𝗰𝗸𝗲𝘁, and its scientific name is the 𝗰𝘂𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗲𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗽𝗼𝘂𝗰𝗵.

The nickname is thought to honor American physicist Joseph Henry, whose work in electromagnetic fields and inductance helped advance our understanding of sound and radio waves. While researchers have not yet confirmed the exact purpose of Henry’s Pocket, several theories exist. Some scientists believe it may help cats detect high-frequency sounds, while others suggest it could aid in pinpointing the direction of sounds or contribute to the impressive range of motion and expression in a cat’s ears.

Cats aren’t the only animals with this unique ear feature—certain dog breeds, as well as weasels and bats share this piece of ear anatomy.

One of the most interesting things about Henry’s Pocket is that it’s true function remains a bit of a mystery. Vets often check Henry’s Pocket during exams because 𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗺𝗶𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗱𝗲𝗯𝗿𝗶𝘀 can accumulate there. So even if the evolutionary purpose is unclear, it has a very real modern use: it’s a little window into ear health.

As science continues to evolve and researchers learn more about animal anatomy and behavior, we may one day discover exactly why this little pocket exists! 🐈🐾

Dr. Crow graduated with 𝘏𝘰𝘯𝘰𝘳𝘴 from the 𝗠𝗶𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗮𝗻 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗴𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗩𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗠𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗲. With more than 30 years of hands‑on clinical experience, Dr. Crow is dedicated to delivering exceptional, compassionate care and approaches every patient with respect for the profound human‑animal bond; the same bond he shares with his canine companion, Maizie.

In addition to his veterinary work, Dr. Crow is an accomplished 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝘀𝘁 whose paintings have been featured in local, regional, and statewide art shows and galleries. When he’s not painting and drawing, other interests include tournament archery, bowhunting, fishing, axe throwing and riding motorcycles.

𝗙𝘂𝗻 𝗙𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗙𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗮𝘆 💭🐴🦷

Did you know that a horse’s teeth continue to grow throughout its life?

Horses are born with two sets of teeth, just like people! The main difference is the second “adult” set of teeth continues to 𝗲𝗿𝘂𝗽𝘁 from the horse’s gum and jawbone at a rate of approximately 𝘢𝘯 𝘦𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵𝘩 𝘰𝘧 𝘢𝘯 𝘪𝘯𝘤𝘩 𝘱𝘦𝘳 𝘺𝘦𝘢𝘳.

As horses eat different forage, their teeth grind down which helps to keep their teeth closer to that sweet spot. As their teeth are growing and grinding, they may get 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗽, 𝘂𝗻𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘄𝗻.

To fix uneven or overgrown teeth, a veterinarian will use a process called “𝗳𝗹𝗼𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴” to grind down the rough areas of the teeth and 𝘳𝘦𝘭𝘪𝘦𝘷𝘦 the horse of pain and discomfort. Some horses also need a float more often than others; this can change based on a horse's lifestyle and genetics.

Dental care is very important for horses, if the teeth are left long it can lead to them dropping feed, losing weight, among other medical issues.
