Rabies transmission concerns can stem from something as simple as exposure to or a scratch or bite from a stray cat.

A human exposure (bite) from a stray cat occurred in the Wilmington area near Dennis Road and Utah Road on June 17. The cat was placed under a 10-day quarantine due to worsening symptoms and concern for rabies. On June 24, the Delaware Public Health Laboratory confirmed rabies positivity. The exposed individual has been notified and has started post-exposure prophylaxis. If you think you have been bitten, scratched, or come in contact with a stray cat in this area on or before June 17, contact the DPH Rabies Program at 302-744-4990. We are the only AAHA accredited veterinary practice in Middletown which means the high standards we hold are nationally recognized. Our select group represents roughly 12% to 15% of all veterinary hospitals in North America. Because accreditation is voluntary in the veterinary field, hospitals like ours choose to undergo rigorous, regular evaluations to ensure they meet or exceed approximately 900 strict standards of care. There are also great resources to share! Everyone should read these reminders the start of summertime.
