The Mission: Saving Lives
Wolf Trap Animal Rescue (WTAR) focuses efforts on rescuing high-risk animals from euthanasia, neglect, and abuse. These animals primarily come from Mississippi, where young animals are euthanized by the hundreds each and every day due to overpopulation. Lack of spay-neuter laws and large sections of rural land allow for free-roaming animals to reproduce, leading to a surp

lus of neglected, homeless, and starving puppies and kittens. These animals are then found and brought to local animal shelters, which simply cannot provide the care or homes these pets need in order to survive. Ultimately, they get euthanized for space or for illnesses contracted at the shelter. We rescue these animals by operating a life-saving transport, foster, and adoption program. WTAR finds the pets who need us the most by employing a full-time transport coordinator on the ground in Mississippi (WTAR South), with the goal of working directly with these shelters and communities to be a resource when they cannot accept any more animals or find enough homes. These transports operate weekly, relieving the shelters and communities from overcrowding and needless euthanasia. Redirecting the intake of young, at-risk animals from the shelter to WTAR allows additional time and resources to be spent on the older, less adoptable residents of the shelter that would otherwise be euthanized for space. Rescued animals are then scheduled and placed on emergency transport with WTAR to Northern Virginia. Upon arrival, they undergo an extensive veterinary intake evaluation and then are placed in foster homes until they find their forever homes through private Meet & Greets.

Adoptions are handled on a first come, first serve basis during the event, and some animals have already received a LOT of interest. If there’s someone you have your eye on, we highly recommend arriving early! Please make sure you have an adoption application on file to get your name on the board.

Sometimes rescue doesn’t look like flashing lights or pulling animals from overcrowded shelters.
Sometimes it looks like one neighbor choosing to care. 💖

Earlier this spring, a Good Samaritan found a stray cat wandering their neighborhood and brought her to our low-cost spay/neuter clinic to make sure she wouldn’t continue contributing to the homeless cat population.

During surgery, Dr. Skylar Drum — one of our WTAR Veterinary Interns — discovered mama was VERY pregnant… likely only a week or two away from delivering her kittens.

Knowing she had originally been scheduled for a spay regardless of pregnancy status, Dr. Burton paused the procedure and made a different call:
“What if we helped her instead?”

We contacted the finder and offered full foster support for mama and babies until the kittens were old enough for adoption — food, medical care, supplies, guidance, everything. And thankfully… they said yes. 🥹🙏

Fast forward 8 weeks later, and these once-unwanted babies are thriving. Today they came in for their very first veterinary exams before heading into new foster homes and eventually, forever families.

This is what community rescue looks like.
Not just emergency pulls.
Not just saving animals at risk of euthanasia.

But supporting the people who WANT to help — and making compassion possible.

One phone call changed the outcome for this entire little family. 🐾

Wow! Words just can’t fully express how grateful we are for all the support we’ve received. We knew we had an amazing community behind us, but this has blown us away. Because of how many people stepped up, we were able to take 12 of the 30 (of the 191) doodles today and are working hard to figure out how to add an additional transport to get more up here before the end of the month. We truly cannot thank everyone enough for the likes, comments, shares, sign ups, donations, encouragement, and care we’ve gotten. Like every transport, we couldn’t do it without you! Stay tuned for the second round of doodles to come! 🐾🖤

🆘191 dogs seized in doodle puppy mill bust 🆘

We need to rally, and we can’t do it without you! 191 doodles were pulled from deplorable conditions in a puppy mill seizure in rural Alabama. We’ve been asked to take 30 of them and we are honored to be part of their next chapter.

Because this is still an active criminal case, we’re not able to share photos of the environment they came from. Even without seeing it, we hope you can understand how much they need this and how urgently we need to move them.

After losing our second transport van last year, we simply do not have the capacity to bring all 30 dogs up at once. We’re having to schedule multiple transports to get them here, and because these are large doodles, each trip limits how many other animals we can bring alongside them.

That means more trips, more time, more cost, and a ripple effect for the other dogs and cats we’ve already committed to helping from our other rescue partners.

These dogs will need fosters as soon as they arrive. Safe homes where they can land, decompress, and start learning what a real life feels like. Right now, we have enough fosters lined up to cover the first round that is arriving this weekend, but we STILL need fosters for future dates in order to save them all.

They are also going to need extensive veterinary care. They have never had any medical attention, and we are preparing for exams, vaccinations, and likely treatment for underlying conditions that haven’t been addressed.

This is a huge undertaking for our team but this is exactly the kind of moment where our community shows up for us!

Everything will be new. The first time sleeping on a soft bed. The first toy. The first treat. The first time they realize people can be kind. Those moments are ahead of them, and fosters are the ones who get to give them that.

If you have ever thought about fostering, this is your moment. Opening your home for a few weeks will truly save a life. You also have first priority in adopting your foster if you fall in love!

If you’ve been thinking about adopting, these dogs are going to need families ready to show them what love looks like. After their 3 week foster period, they’ll be ready to find their forever homes through our meet and greet process.
