Great Plains SPCA

Great Plains SPCA Serving 7K pets, 500K owners & 9 municipalities. KC’s top-rated pet shelter. Adopt • Donate • Volunteer • Train
(2494)

Great Plains SPCA provides lifesaving services for approximately 6,800 animals and 500,000 residents annually in the greater Kansas City area. Great Plains SPCA exists because of our caring Kansas City community and generous donors. We offer a lifelong, full-circle approach for pets and their human companions with our three-pronged approach: prevention, adoption, retention. When we began as Animal

Haven in 1966, we committed to working as the community shelter, filling in a need that didn’t exist at the time. Today, our commitment remains to the cities and residents we support. As Kansas City’s premium family shelter, we continue to support the nine municipalities with which we are contracted, including Overland Park, Leawood, Lenexa, Prairie Village, Bonner Springs, Lake Quivira and Johnson County Parks Department and the Johnson County Sheriff’s Department. We work every day to provide best in class care for homeless pets, reuniting lost pets with their owners, and serving those in greatest need through our Adoption, Foster, Spay and Neuter, HERO program and Behavior support. Our commitment to matching pets with forever homes is at the center of everything we do. Our mission is to drive change in our community through innovative programs that promote adoption, outreach and a better life for pets and the people who love them. To keep our mission at the forefront of everything we do, at Great Plains SPCA we uphold a culture where:

-We treat animals and people with respect, dignity and compassion.
-We focus on the “we” versus “me” driving results with flexibility, efficiency and integrity.
-We are a diverse, proactive team with a solution-focused mindset that strives to be the best animal shelter in the Midwest. Great Plains SPCA provides lifesaving programs, including:
- Adoptions
- Lost Pet Reunions
- Volunteering
- Fostering
- HERO (Humane Education Resources Outreach)
- Behavior and Training

"When I came in this morning, Bay's chin and neck were soaked with slobber from stress. She was panting heavily and had a look in her eyes that said she was overwhelmed and scared."

These were notes left by a staff member after spending time with Bay.

The shelter environment is proving to be difficult for this 1-year-old girl. Seeing her struggle in a kennel is heartbreaking because the moment she gets outside, she becomes a completely different dog. The stress melts away, and she turns into a loving, affectionate cuddle bug who just wants to be close to people.

Bay recently transferred to us from another shelter and is looking for a place where she can finally exhale. A foster or adoptive home would give her the chance to decompress, feel safe, and show off the wonderful dog we know she is.

Bay would do best in a home without small dogs or cats.

If you can foster or adopt, please consider opening your home to Bay. If you can't, sharing her story could help her find the person she's been waiting for.

On Thursday, Great Plains SPCA hosted a successful Animal Cruelty and Fighting Investigations Training, bringing together law enforcement and animal welfare professionals from across the region.

Together, we strengthened our knowledge, collaboration, and commitment to protecting animals and preventing cruelty in our communities.

Thank you to everyone who attended and to our partners for making this impactful training possible!

Looking for a playful best friend with a soft side? Meet Luca. ☀️🎾

Luca is thriving in foster care and showing everyone what a fun, loving companion he is. He loves playing fetch with tennis balls, wrestling with his dog friends, and curling up for sunny naps around the house. At the end of the day, he’s happiest cuddled up on the couch with his people.

His foster says he is quiet in his kennel overnight, appears potty trained, and responds well to his name. He can be a little curious with food and household items, but he’s learning quickly and has already made great progress.

Luca has so much love, personality, and joy to give. He’s ready to find a family to call his own. 🐾

Emergency Intake: Seven Newborn Puppies 💔

Seven newborn puppies, just 7 days old, were surrendered to another shelter without their mother. Because they were too young to survive on their own and required around-the-clock bottle feeding, they were at risk of euthanasia.

Thankfully, that shelter reached out to Great Plains SPCA, and we were able to bring them to safety.

Now in foster care, these tiny puppies are completely dependent on formula, warmth, and constant care to survive. We are already running low on the milk they need, and every feeding is critical.

Their story is also a reminder of why spay and neuter matters. Preventing unwanted litters helps prevent situations like this, where newborn lives begin in crisis.

We need your support: your donation today will help us continue providing the best quality services for these puppies and all of the pets in our care.

Nothing hits like a foster reunion.

Fostering doesn’t just change their stay, it leaves a lasting mark.

If you’ve ever thought about fostering, this is your sign.
