Foster Friday is one of our favorite days, because when our animals head into foster homes, we learn so much about who they really are. 💙

Take Gibby, for example. His recent holiday foster family discovered that he’s not only great with other dogs... he’s also surprisingly helpful around the house. Gardening? He’ll proudly carry a frozen plant. Dishwasher loading? He’s happy to supervise (very closely). Floor warming? Absolute professional.

We think Gibby would do best with teens and older since his zoomies may be too much for smaller friends. Beyond his impressive “household skills,” foster care has shown us that Gibby is a total sweetheart who loves routine, naps hard, and thrives in a home environment. These kinds of insights help us make better matches and sets everyone up for success.

Professional floof. Handsome gentleman. Boundary enthusiast.

Nutcracker has a theory, and honestly, it checks out. When you’re this fluffy and this handsome, people tend to get a little grabby. As a result, Nutcracker has learned the fine art of setting boundaries. He prefers a slower greeting, a respectful distance, and time to decide when, and if, he’s ready to engage. 🐾

You’ll usually find him perched atop a cat tower in his community room, surveying the scene like a feline philosopher, birdwatching out the window, and quietly judging the weather. He enjoys the company of other cats, appreciates calm, and thrives with people who understand that trust is something you earn, not rush. 💙

Nutcracker would do best in an adult-only, cat-experienced home, ideally with feline friends, where his autonomy is respected and his magnificence admired from an appropriate distance.

One of them was Butters, a sweet orange boy who was adopted shortly after their visit. We think it’s safe to say they were his lucky charm! 🧡

Some cats just need a little extra time, and the right people, to truly shine. 💛

Meet Tink and Blue, two former MHHS “spirit cats” who found their forever family. Their adopters knew they were taking a chance on cats who might be a tougher sell, and they say it’s been one of the most rewarding decisions they’ve ever made.

The early days came with patience, learning curves, and a few bumps along the way, but with support from our team, consistency, and a whole lot of love, Tink and Blue found their footing. Today, they’re playful, bonded, curious companions who choose to be close, share space with confidence, and fill their home with personality (and the occasional zoomie).

Stories like theirs are why we’re extending the love with our Let Them Shine Adoption Special! Through Saturday, January 17, 2026, adoption fees for all of our shy, spicy, and spirit cats are just $26. 😻

Some of them are still here and today he’s thinking about them.

Nacho is a shy spirit cat who prefers the quiet company of other cats and feels safest observing the world on his own terms. Milo is a sweet, sensitive dog who does best as the only animal in the home, where he can enjoy a calm environment and form a strong bond with his people.

Their paths are different, but what they all need is the same:

He may not care much about calendars, but he does know when timing matters (dinner time for example!) and today is one of those days when it matters most.

Here are a few of his resolutions:
🐾 Sniff out at least one new friend every day
🐾 Assume all bags contain treats until proven otherwise
🐾 Help more animals feel safe

Founded in 1887, the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society (MHHS) is the oldest and largest animal protection organization in New York's Capital Region, serving Albany, Rensselaer, and Saratoga counties. In addition to providing shelter and care for stray, abused and unwanted animals, we provide an ever-increasing array of services for animals and those who care for them. This includes low-cost spay/neuter and wellness services, vaccination and microchip clinics, stray housing for municipalities, dog training, a pet food pantry, humane education programming for all ages, and more.

We are located at 3 Oakland Avenue in Menands, NY, and serve the New York North Country at our clinic located at 4255 NY-50, Saratoga Springs.
