The men of rescue: Day 6
Whether it’s a last minute we don’t have a truck for our animal food pickup 😳😭, missing a volunteer for an event, our breaks are going out on the vehicle we use to get animals around, or showing up to every single fundraiser we know he doesn’t want to go to. Mike Siska shows up every single time. We couldn’t do it without backbone like this. Thank you Mike for rooting for the Underdog with us!

Fostering means temporarily opening your home to an animal who needs a safe place while they wait for their permanent family.

For a foster-based rescue like Cleo’s Legacy, foster homes are what make rescue possible. Instead of animals living in a shelter, they live in real homes where they can decompress, heal, learn routines, and show us who they really are.

A foster provides the home, patience, love, and day-to-day care. The rescue remains responsible for the animal and coordinates things like veterinary care, adoption, and support.

And fostering isn’t adopting. You’re the bridge between where that animal came from and where they’re going.

Every new foster home means another animal can potentially be told: “Yes. We have somewhere safe for you to go.”

WHY WE KEEP SAYING YES

After the last few posts, I want to make something clear.

We’re not angry that rescue is hard.

We knew it would be.

And we’re not asking anyone to feel sorry for us.

We do this because somewhere tonight there is a dog sleeping in a warm bed instead of a shelter kennel because someone said yes.

There is a senior curled up on someone’s couch because a foster made room.

There is a terrified dog learning that hands can be kind.

There is a kitten alive because someone got up every two hours to feed it.

There is an animal getting medical care because strangers donated $5 at a time.

That’s why we keep doing this.

But I also think people need to understand that every “yes” you see from a small rescue has people behind it.

Someone rearranged their house.

Someone drove the miles.

Someone stayed up worrying.

Someone raised the money.

Someone opened their heart knowing full well that sometimes, despite everything we do, we still lose them.

And then somehow, we get up and say yes again.

That’s Cleo’s Legacy.

We’re not trying to build an empire.

We’re trying to build a little breathing room.

A place where the sick one can recover.

Where the scared one can decompress.

Where supplies are ready when the next emergency comes.

Where a dog coming from the street or shelter can have a safe in-between before we ask a foster family to open their home.

The Healing Village isn’t about changing who we are.

It’s about making sure we can keep being who we’ve always been.

People who make room.

People who figure it out.

People who say yes when we can.

And right now, we’re asking our community to make a little room for us.

Help us build the walls so we can keep opening doors.

Sweet Serenity had a vet visit today!
​We met with her vet to explore additional options in hopes of getting her breakthrough seizures under better control, and we're officially adding a second prescription medication to her daily routine. Between her prescriptions, MCT oil, salmon oil, C*D oil, and daily vitamins, we are doing everything possible to keep her feeling her best and as comfortable as possible.
​Serenity is such a sweet soul who loves nothing more than couch naps and snuggle time. With more daily meds starting up, we would be so grateful for anyone willing to send pill pockets from her wishlist to help medicine time go smoothly!

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN THE LITTLE RESCUES DISAPPEAR?

Yesterday I said one day the phone is going to ring and there may not be a small rescue left to answer it.

I don’t think people understand how real that is.

Small rescues don’t usually disappear because people stop caring.

They disappear because caring doesn’t pay the vet bill.

Passion doesn’t buy heartworm prevention.

Love doesn’t pay a professional trainer.

And you can only ask the same exhausted volunteers to give their homes, vehicles, evenings, weekends and 40+ unpaid hours a week for so long while ALSO asking them to somehow find the money to keep everything running.

Eventually, something breaks.

And when a small rescue closes?

The animals don’t disappear with it.

The senior still needs somewhere to go.

The medical dog still needs treatment.

The bottle babies still need someone awake at 2 a.m.

The behavioral dog still needs someone willing to invest the time and money instead of giving up.

The shelter is still full.

There are just fewer people left to call.

That’s why we’re fighting so hard for Cleo’s Legacy to become sustainable.

Not bigger for the sake of being bigger.

Not corporate.

Not a traditional shelter.

Sustainable.

The Healing Village is part of that.

A modest place for recovery. Medical and basic supplies. Quarantine. Decompression. And that critical in-between when an animal isn’t quite ready to go straight from the street or shelter into someone’s home.

Because we don’t want to wait until we’re drowning to ask our community to care whether we survive.

We’re asking now.

If you’ve watched us show up for animals in your community, this is your chance to show up for the people doing it.

Because the scariest thing isn’t Cleo’s Legacy saying, “We need help.”

It’s the day someone calls us for an animal who desperately needs help…

and there’s nobody left on the other end of the phone.
