Well hello again!
We didn’t want to disappear completely, but things around here are different. After downsizing, or, being forced to do so (don’t trust a feed store... not without freezing first!) we are no longer selling pup pairings. This time around we’re serving a need we see in the community; the lone gerbil.
We will offer an adult/elder gerbil bonded to at least 2 pups of the same gender.
We have taken in enough difficult cases over the years to believe we can do it exclusively. This is to keep our main line going at the same time as helping gerbils that have declanned or became alone through other means, if the owners decide to give them up.
It’s a very compassionate choice we’ve seen many times, so we’ve taken them in, bonded the gerbil to another or more, and the gerbil was happy again acting as the wise old sage of their new, more expansive colony, often securing a new, second home.
A gerbil colony in the wild is made up of 20-25 individuals with a single female gerbil at the top of the social structure, and the most dominant of the born pups would naturally be able to leave in order to not become competition for the alpha female.
It is also known that most pairings will usually have a dominant personality and a more relaxed submissive personality. A declanning usually happens when one is *too far dominate* and in our experience this might mean that they would have left their home colony for the chance to breed by starting their own somewhere else. Therefore, these *far leaning* dominant personalities have tended to do well with a clan of little ones, since they get to mother/father them in ways that they might have wanted or needed. It also helps the math since they’re so social to need companions most of the time, even when an accident or bad luck may occur.
